NBB and TerraPay Partner to Bridge Traditional Banking with Global Digital Wallets
By Lauren Towner · 13 October 2026

The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has partnered with TerraPay to integrate the latter’s global payout network into its existing banking infrastructure. This move allows the bank to offer real-time, transparent cross-border payments to over 12 billion endpoints, signaling a significant shift for Middle Eastern financial institutions looking to modernize international money movement without abandoning traditional Swift systems.
What was announced
NBB will leverage TerraPay’s digital infrastructure to expand its international reach and simplify payout operations. A critical technical component of this partnership is the use of Swift ISO 20022 messaging, which enables the bank to deliver cross-border transactions in real-time. This integration ensures full transparency for the customer, specifically guaranteeing that no deductions are taken from the principal amount during the transfer process.
The collaboration utilizes TerraPay’s strategic Swift connectivity. This allows NBB to use its existing Swift infrastructure and Relationship Management Application (RMA) key exchange processes to tap into TerraPay’s network. This network encompasses bank accounts, digital wallets, and local payment systems across the globe. By bypassing the need for multiple direct integrations into individual markets, the bank can accelerate its access to new payout corridors.
The service is designed for NBB’s customers in Bahrain and the surrounding region, providing them with access to a broader range of payment destinations as their financial requirements become more global. The partnership aims to bridge the gap between traditional correspondent banking and the emerging ecosystem of instant digital payments, allowing NBB to maintain its core banking services while delivering a modern, digital-first customer experience. The infrastructure is built to support the growth of customers whose operational needs are increasingly international, requiring both speed and reliability in transaction banking.
"Banks want to extend their international payment reach without having to build and maintain separate connections into every market, wallet and local payment system. That is exactly the problem TerraPay solves. By combining TerraPay’s global payout network with Swift connectivity, NBB can use its existing banking infrastructure to access more than 12 billion bank accounts, digital wallets and local payment systems through a single global network. This partnership gives NBB a faster and more scalable way to expand into new corridors, broaden customer choice and improve the cross-border payment experience, while allowing the bank to retain control of the customer relationship and its core banking infrastructure. NBB is a strong example of how leading banks are choosing TerraPay to extend traditional correspondent banking into the rapidly growing world of instant payments and digital wallets."

What FF News has reported before
FF News has followed the expansion of both entities closely, particularly TerraPay’s aggressive partnership strategy. Furthermore, the company’s reach into the Asian market was bolstered when TerraPay and Alipay+ Launch Cross-Border QR Payments for 3.7 Billion Wallets. On the banking side, the National Bank of Bahrain has been active in modernizing regional trade infrastructure. FF News noted that NBB Becomes First Anchor Bank for Bahrain’s New Trade Finance Registry, a move aimed at reducing fraud and improving transparency in trade finance. This latest partnership with TerraPay continues NBB's trend of adopting digital-first solutions to enhance its core transaction banking proposition.
What this means
This partnership highlights a growing industry trend where traditional banks are no longer attempting to build proprietary global rails. Instead, they are leveraging fintech aggregators to bridge the gap between Swift and local digital wallets. By utilizing ISO 20022 messaging as the common language, NBB is effectively bypassing the slow, opaque nature of traditional correspondent banking. This puts pressure on other regional banks to find similar shortcuts to global liquidity. The move also underscores the rising dominance of digital wallets in cross-border flows; for a bank to remain relevant, it must now treat a mobile wallet in an emerging market with the same priority as a Tier-1 bank account in a major financial hub.
