OnDeck has launched automated final-decisioning for small business loan applications, utilizing AI and machine learning to reduce funding decision times from hours to under a minute. This development is a critical milestone for fintech professionals, as it aims to provide stipulation-free offers that eliminate the traditional friction and paperwork associated with SME credit.

What was announced

The new capability centers on AI-powered verification combined with OnDeck’s existing machine learning models. By automating the final decisioning process, the company intends to route a growing share of its billions in annual originations through this streamlined system. The primary objective is to provide qualified applicants with a final answer in less than sixty seconds, allowing them to move directly to the funding stage without the need to submit additional documentation or navigate complex "stipulations."

Initially, OnDeck rolled out these automated approvals to a select group of eligible existing customers. Following that successful pilot, the functionality is now being extended to new customers applying through any of the company’s channels. This rollout is underpinned by the company's proprietary analytics and is still subject to OnDeck’s established underwriting standards and continuous model performance monitoring to ensure responsible lending practices are maintained.

The timing of the launch aligns with broader market trends identified in OnDeck’s latest Small Business Cash Flow Trend Report, produced in collaboration with Ocrolus. The findings of that report include:

  • 61% of small businesses are already integrating AI into their own operations.
  • 91% of those AI users report that the technology has had a positive impact on their business.
  • 75% of small businesses are now seeking working capital from sources beyond traditional banking institutions.

OnDeck will be showcasing this automated lending approach at two upcoming industry events: Money20/20, taking place from October 18–21, and the B2B Finance Expo, scheduled for October 20–21.

"We didn't set out to be the fastest lender – we set out to be the easiest. When you apply the right AI and analytics, ease and speed come together naturally, without cutting corners. Business owners get an immediate answer and eligible applicants can move straight to funding – without extra paperwork."

The companies involved

OnDeck operates as a major brand within the portfolio of Enova International, a technology and analytics company focused on online lending. OnDeck has established itself as a proven leader in the small business lending sector, positioning its brand around the pillars of transparency and responsible lending practices. Since its acquisition by Enova, OnDeck has leveraged the parent company’s broader technological infrastructure and world-class analytics to scale its lending operations and refine its credit models.

Enova International, the corporate parent, provides the analytical framework and machine learning expertise that supports OnDeck’s originations. The company’s focus on sophisticated data science is central to its strategy of automating the credit lifecycle for businesses that have traditionally been underserved by the legacy banking sector. As a leader in the online lending space, OnDeck manages billions of dollars in annual originations, serving a diverse range of small businesses that require rapid, streamlined access to capital. The company’s presence at major industry events like Money20/20 underscores its role as a benchmark for how machine learning is applied to commercial credit risk in the modern fintech era.

What this means

This move toward sub-minute, stipulation-free decisioning represents an aggressive escalation in the "speed-to-capital" race within the SME lending market. While many digital lenders offer "instant" pre-approvals, the shift to a final, automated decision without manual intervention removes the last major hurdle in the digital lending journey. This puts significant pressure on traditional banks, whose legacy systems and manual underwriting processes often require days or weeks for similar assessments. The high adoption rate of AI among small businesses suggests that borrowers are no longer intimidated by algorithmic lending; they are actively seeking it to solve cash flow needs. The industry must now consider whether speed and ease will permanently supersede the relationship-based models that have historically defined small business banking.
