NOWPayments has released new aggregated data showing a significant shift in crypto adoption, with SaaS and eCommerce marketplaces now accounting for over 55% of its partner base. This transition from speculative trading toward operational utility signals a maturing market where stablecoins are becoming integral to day-to-day business infrastructure and recurring revenue models.

What was announced

The data covers the period between January 16 and July 16, 2026, comparing it to the same window in 2025. The most significant finding is the rise of SaaS and web services, which saw their share of classified partners jump from 15.58% to 27.78% in just twelve months. This growth effectively closed a 17.10 percentage point gap with the eCommerce sector. eCommerce marketplaces remained a dominant force at 27.76%, and when combined with SaaS, these two operationally-heavy sectors now represent 55.54% of the total sample—a 15.08% year-over-year increase in their collective share.

In contrast, speculative and high-turnover sectors saw a decline. Trading, which held a 14.07% share in 2025, dropped to 13.15% in 2026. Financial Services fell from 9.00% to 6.35%, while Charity and TGE/Presale activities also saw their shares contract to 1.40% and 1.35%, respectively. However, some high-risk categories saw modest growth, with Gambling and iGaming rising to 6.87% and adult platforms reaching 5.89%. The data also highlighted the dominance of specific networks; USDT on TRON accounted for 54.58% of successful payments within eCommerce marketplaces, though it maintained a much lower presence in trading (12.04%) and SaaS (9.60%). For these businesses, stablecoin integration now extends beyond simple checkouts to include recurring billing, invoice matching, account activation, and seller settlements.

"The mistake is asking which stablecoin is best. The better question is: best for what? Businesses should define the billing, checkout, settlement, payout, and reconciliation flow first. The coin and network should serve that workflow – not the other way around."

The companies involved

NOWPayments is a cryptocurrency payment gateway provider that enables businesses to accept a wide variety of digital assets. According to proprietary context, the company operates as an independent entity with no listed parent company or former names. Kate Lifshits serves as the Chief Executive Officer at NOWPayments, leading the firm’s efforts to provide non-custodial payment solutions. The platform is designed to integrate with various business models, offering tools for recurring billing, automated payouts, and financial reconciliation.

In the current fintech landscape, the company positions itself as a bridge between blockchain technology and traditional business operations. Rather than focusing solely on the speculative aspect of digital assets, the firm provides infrastructure that supports complex payment flows, such as seller settlements in marketplaces or subscription renewals for software providers. This focus on operational utility allows businesses to manage stablecoin transactions within their existing financial frameworks, addressing the needs of digital-native companies that require more than just a simple checkout button.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked the expansion of NOWPayments’ utility-focused partnerships. In September 2026, the publication reported on NOWPayments and Staynex Launch Crypto Travel Booking for TOKEN2049 Singapore. This initiative involved the launch of a co-branded booking platform specifically designed for attendees of the TOKEN2049 event, allowing users to pay for travel arrangements using cryptocurrency.

The collaboration with Staynex served as a practical demonstration of how crypto payments can be embedded into specific industry verticals, such as travel and hospitality. By providing a dedicated booker for a major industry event, the companies showcased the ability to handle real-world transactions outside of the typical trading environment. This prior coverage aligns with the recent data suggesting a broader trend of crypto moving into the day-to-day operating infrastructure of various digital and service-based businesses.

What this means

The shift in sector dominance from trading to SaaS and eCommerce marks a critical turning point for the crypto industry. It suggests that the market is moving away from purely speculative assets and toward "utility-first" adoption. For the broader fintech sector, this puts significant pressure on traditional payment processors who have been slow to integrate stablecoin rails. The high concentration of USDT on TRON within eCommerce highlights a clear preference for low-cost, high-speed networks for retail transactions. However, the move into SaaS introduces new complexities regarding automated reconciliation and tax compliance, which remain open questions for the sector to solve as these payment flows become more deeply embedded in corporate infrastructure.
