HSBC and Ant Digital Technologies have successfully completed a technical verification test demonstrating how autonomous AI agents can manage service interactions and execute micropayments using tokenized deposits. This milestone illustrates the potential for regulated banking infrastructure and blockchain to merge, allowing software to handle end-to-end financial transactions with real-time settlement and automated risk controls.

What was announced

The technical verification test focused on the ability of AI agents to act on behalf of users to navigate service interactions and associated payments as a single, connected process. During the test, an AI agent successfully discovered a digital service, initiated a micropayment—defined as a transaction of less than $2.00—and completed the settlement in real-time. This end-to-end model utilized tokenized deposits to bridge the gap between autonomous decision-making and regulated financial movement.

HSBC provided the foundational Tokenised Deposit Service (TDS) and its Multi-Currency Pricing (MCP) interface to handle real-time risk checks and settlement capabilities. Ant Digital Technologies contributed the Anvita Flow network, which provided the necessary infrastructure for AI agents to invoke services and manage the settlement of micropayments. The underlying blockchain environment for these transactions was the Jovay Testnet, a Layer 2 solution. Together, these technologies validated the infrastructure needed to connect AI-driven decision-making, service access, and financial controls within one automated process.

The companies noted that this technical verification was carried out solely as an exploration of the technology. It does not represent a commercial launch or a live customer proposition. Its primary significance lies in demonstrating how autonomous AI systems could potentially participate in leveraging tokenized deposits to enhance the use of micropayments across the customer journey, combining the speed of software with the controls required by financial institutions.

"Through our Tokenised Deposit Service, we're exploring how continued innovation, new use cases and collaboration could help enhance the customer experience and reduce friction for our clients while remaining focused on client needs, appropriate controls and responsible development."

The companies involved

HSBC is one of the world’s largest banking and financial services organizations, maintaining a significant presence across global markets. The institution is a frequent subject of industry analysis, with 216 reports in the FF News archive covering its various digital transformations and corporate activities. Within its Corporate and Institutional Banking (CIB) division, the firm has increasingly focused on domestic and emerging payment technologies to streamline cross-border and high-frequency transactions. Lewis Sun serves as the MD and Global Head of Domestic and Emerging Payments within this division.

Ant Digital Technologies operates as a specialized technology provider focusing on blockchain, AI, and the modernization of digital infrastructure. The company’s blockchain endeavors are led by Zhuoqun Bian, who serves as the President of Blockchain Business. The firm develops proprietary infrastructure such as the Anvita Flow network and the Jovay Testnet blockchain environment. These tools are designed to facilitate Layer 2 transactions, providing the speed and scalability required for high-frequency digital interactions. By integrating these technologies with regulated banking services, the company seeks to demonstrate how autonomous software can operate within traditional financial frameworks.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively tracked HSBC’s involvement in the intersection of digital assets and institutional finance. Recently, the bank was involved when the UK Treasury Appoints Major Banks to Lead Digital Gilt (DIGIT) Pilot Issuance, signaling a move toward digitally native government bonds. The bank has also been active in applying artificial intelligence to legacy processes, as seen when HSBC Launches AI-Powered Smart Checking to Revolutionize Global Trade Finance Documentation. However, the institution’s broader corporate activities have also faced scrutiny; FF News reported that UK Banks Lead Europe in Coal Financing as Barclays and HSBC Defy Net-Zero Trends. This ongoing coverage highlights a dual strategy of aggressive technological adoption alongside traditional, large-scale financing operations.

What this means

This technical verification moves the needle by proving that the "machine economy" is technically feasible within a regulated framework. For years, the high cost of transaction processing has made micropayments economically unviable for most digital services. By combining AI agents with tokenized deposits, this model suggests a future where software can negotiate and pay for services autonomously, bypassing the friction of traditional card rails. This development puts significant pressure on legacy payment providers who rely on flat-fee models. The primary question for the industry now is how risk frameworks will adapt to handle autonomous financial decision-making without constant human oversight.
