Press Release: National Bank of Bahrain Taps TerraPay to Revolutionize Cross-Border Payments via Swift Connectivity | Featured Image by FF News

The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has partnered with TerraPay to integrate the latter’s global payout network into its existing banking infrastructure. For fintech professionals, this move highlights the ongoing shift toward real-time, ISO 20022-compliant cross-border payments, allowing traditional regional banks to bypass complex direct integrations while significantly expanding their international reach.

What was announced

The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) has entered a strategic partnership with TerraPay to enhance its international payout capabilities. By integrating TerraPay’s digital global payout network, NBB aims to provide its customers in Bahrain and the wider region with a more streamlined cross-border payment experience. The collaboration allows the bank to extend its reach to a broader range of payment destinations without the need for multiple direct integrations into individual markets.

A central component of this partnership is the utilization of TerraPay’s Swift connectivity. This enables NBB to leverage its existing Swift infrastructure and Relationship Management Application (RMA) key exchange processes to access a network encompassing more than 12 billion bank accounts, digital wallets, and local payment systems worldwide. The system is designed to receive Swift ISO 20022 messaging, ensuring that transactions are delivered in real-time with full transparency.

For the end customer, the service promises a "no deductions" model, meaning the principal amount sent remains intact upon arrival. By bridging traditional banking systems with emerging digital payment ecosystems, the partnership focuses on reducing the operational complexity typically associated with scaling payment corridors. This allows NBB to maintain its core banking services while offering the speed and accessibility associated with modern digital wallets and local payment systems.

"Banks want to extend their international payment reach without having to build and maintain separate connections into every market, wallet and local payment system. That is exactly the problem TerraPay solves. By combining TerraPay’s global payout network with Swift connectivity, NBB can use its existing banking infrastructure to access more than 12 billion bank accounts, digital wallets and local payment systems through a single global network. This partnership gives NBB a faster and more scalable way to expand into new corridors, broaden customer choice and improve the cross-border payment experience, while allowing the bank to retain control of the customer relationship and its core banking infrastructure. NBB is a strong example of how leading banks are choosing TerraPay to extend traditional correspondent banking into the rapidly growing world of instant payments and digital wallets."

The companies involved

The National Bank of Bahrain (NBB) is a primary financial institution in the Kingdom of Bahrain, providing a range of retail and commercial banking services. As an established player in the regional market, NBB has increasingly focused on digital transformation to maintain its competitive edge in the Middle East's evolving financial landscape. The bank maintains deep customer relationships and a significant physical and digital presence within its home market.

TerraPay is a global digital money movement company that specializes in building the infrastructure for international payments. The firm provides a single point of integration for banks and fintechs to connect with a vast network of bank accounts, mobile wallets, and cards across the globe. By focusing on the infrastructure layer of the payment process, TerraPay enables its partners to offer real-time cross-border transfers. The company has become a frequent subject of industry coverage, with a significant footprint in the global payments ecosystem, facilitating the transition from traditional correspondent banking to more agile, instant payment methods.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed the expansion of both entities closely. Recently, we covered how TerraPay Integrates Verify with Kinexys by J.P. Morgan to Tackle Cross-Border Payment Failure, showcasing the company's focus on transaction reliability. In the African market, we reported that Exim Bank Uganda and TerraPay Launch Exim Global Pay for Seamless Cross-Border Payments.

TerraPay’s work with SMEs was highlighted when RemitBee and TerraPay Partner to Scale Global Cross-Border Payouts for Canadian SMEs. Meanwhile, NBB has been exploring the frontiers of digital currency, as seen in our report on how Partior and NBB Partner to Explore On-Chain Bahraini Dinar Settlement.

What this means

This partnership signals a growing trend where regional incumbents are opting for "infrastructure-as-a-service" to modernize their cross-border offerings. By utilizing TerraPay’s Swift-integrated network, NBB avoids the heavy lifting of building bespoke rails for every new corridor. This puts pressure on traditional correspondent banks that rely on slower, multi-hop settlement processes. The move also raises questions for the wider Middle Eastern banking sector: as real-time, transparent cross-border payments become the baseline expectation for retail and business customers, can smaller regional banks afford to remain outside these global digital networks? The shift toward ISO 20022 and instant wallet payouts is no longer a niche requirement but a competitive necessity.
