Bolt is launching Bolt Money, an embedded financial service for its 4.5 million driver and courier partners, powered by Airwallex’s infrastructure. By integrating wallets and cards directly into the mobility platform, Bolt is removing the friction between earning and spending, providing gig workers with immediate access to their funds and a streamlined financial management experience.

What was announced

Bolt has introduced Bolt Money, a dedicated financial service designed to consolidate the earning and spending experience for its global network of drivers and couriers. Developed in partnership with Airwallex, the offering embeds financial tools directly into the Bolt platform, allowing partners to manage their earnings without relying on external bank accounts for daily transactions. The core of the product is a digital wallet and a physical card, enabling users to access their funds for everyday spending as soon as they are earned.

This shift addresses a common pain point in the gig economy: the delay between completing a job and receiving the payout. By moving away from traditional scheduled payout cycles, Bolt Money provides real-time visibility into earnings and immediate liquidity. The partnership initially began with Airwallex supporting Bolt’s payout operations in Canada, where an Airwallex Business Account provided the foundation to receive, hold, and pay out funds. Following the success of that integration, the collaboration has expanded to leverage Airwallex’s full suite of financial infrastructure, including its global licensing, account management, and card-issuing capabilities.

Bolt currently operates across more than 50 countries and 850 cities, supporting over 200 million customers and a network of 4.5 million driver, courier, and merchant partners. Bolt Money aims to simplify the complex financial ecosystem inherent in a platform that spans ride-hailing, food delivery, and micromobility, giving partners a more useful way to manage their money through the platform they already use for work.

"Having the right financial infrastructure is really important. Airwallex gave us that foundation from day one: the licensing, the accounts, the payouts, and the card issuing, through one partner and one integration. Knowing that we can build and scale confidently with Airwallex is what lets us focus on the experience itself."

The companies involved

Bolt is a major global mobility platform that has expanded significantly from its origins in ride-hailing to include a wide array of services such as scooter and e-bike rentals, car-sharing, and food delivery. Serving over 200 million customers globally, the company has positioned itself as a central player in the urban transport and delivery sectors across 50 countries. Its ecosystem relies on a vast workforce of more than 4.5 million partners, making the management of high-volume payments and financial services a critical operational requirement for the firm.

Airwallex provides the underlying financial technology that makes these embedded services possible. As a global financial platform, Airwallex specializes in providing the infrastructure for businesses to manage everything from international payouts to card issuing and treasury management. With a significant presence in the fintech sector, evidenced by the 150 stories FF News has published regarding their market activity, Airwallex has established itself as a go-to partner for platforms looking to integrate financial services into their existing user experiences. The company’s ability to offer a single integration for licensing and multi-currency accounts allows global platforms like Bolt to scale their financial products across different jurisdictions.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed Airwallex’s rapid expansion into various sectors, recently reporting on its role as the Airwallex Named McLaren F1's First Official AI Finance Partner in Multi-Year Extension and its collaboration with Airwallex and OpenTable Partner to Revolutionize Global Restaurant Payments and Reduce No-Shows. The company’s influence in the payments space was further highlighted when it was selected to participate in the Adyen, Airwallex, and Checkout.com to Debate Future of Acquiring at PSE Consulting Conference alongside other industry giants. Regarding this specific partnership, FF News previously noted the initial launch of Bolt Money: New Embedded Finance Offering for Drivers Powered by Airwallex, marking a significant step in Bolt's evolution from a mobility provider to a financial services player for its workforce.

What this means

This move signals a maturing of the gig economy, where platforms are no longer just sources of work but are becoming the primary financial hubs for their contractors. By embedding banking services, Bolt is essentially increasing the stickiness of its workforce, making it more convenient for drivers to stay within the Bolt ecosystem than to transfer funds to external accounts. This puts traditional retail banks and even consumer-facing neobanks under pressure, as they lose the primary transaction volume of millions of gig workers. The success of Bolt Money will likely hinge on the seamlessness of the card's acceptance and whether the "instant access" feature is enough to offset the lack of a full-service banking relationship. It raises questions about whether other mobility giants will be forced to follow suit to remain competitive in driver retention.
