Airwallex has expanded its partnership with the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team, becoming its Official AI Finance Partner starting in January 2027. The move signals a shift toward AI-native financial infrastructure in high-performance environments, as the fintech looks to deploy its "agentic banking" stack to streamline McLaren’s global payment collection and cross-border financial operations.

What was announced

The agreement marks a significant elevation of a relationship that began in 2024. Starting in January 2027, Airwallex will serve as the Official AI Finance Partner for the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team. This expanded role focuses on the integration of AI-native financial software to drive efficiency in McLaren’s financial operations, specifically targeting the collection of payments through a variety of global and local methods.

The announcement follows a period of rapid scaling for Airwallex, which recently secured $320 million in Series H funding at an $11 billion valuation. This capital is being directed toward the development of autonomous finance infrastructure, including T:0—an AI-native platform designed to manage end-to-end business finance functions—and Airi, an agentic consumer wallet that supports multi-currency balances and delegated payments.

On the track, the Airwallex brand will gain increased visibility. In addition to existing placements on the drivers' overalls and the Halo Rear Left position on both Formula 1 cars, the logo will now appear on the sleeves of the team kit. The partnership continues to underpin McLaren’s digital merchandise platform, ensuring the team can process transactions across borders as it builds on its recent competitive success, including the 20th Constructors’ World Championship and Lando Norris’s Drivers’ Championship title in 2025.

"Partnering closely with Airwallex demonstrates our long-term commitment to investing in faster, more efficient technology. Airwallex is our first Official AI Finance Partner and we’re confident in their ability to help us run our financial operations faster and more efficiently."

The companies involved

Airwallex is a global financial platform designed for modern, cross-border businesses. Since its inception, the company has positioned itself as a critical layer of financial infrastructure, offering a unified stack that includes payments, treasury, and expense management. With a valuation of $11 billion following its Series H round, the firm has transitioned from a pure-play payments provider into a developer of AI-native financial software. It operates globally, providing the rails for companies to move money and manage multi-currency balances without the friction associated with traditional banking systems.

The McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 Team represents the pinnacle of automotive engineering and competitive racing. As part of the broader McLaren Racing stable, the team has a long history of technical innovation, often serving as a testbed for high-performance technologies that eventually filter down to the wider industry. The team’s commercial strategy has increasingly leaned into the fintech and digital payments sectors, exemplified by its title partnership with Mastercard and its long-term technical collaboration with Airwallex. The team recently secured its 10th Constructors’ World Championship, reinforcing its position as a dominant force in the sport.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has tracked Airwallex’s aggressive push into the "Agentic Banking" space throughout 2026. In September, we reported that Airwallex Secures $320M to Scale AI-Native Autonomous Finance Infrastructure, a move that set the stage for its current focus on autonomous operations. This was followed in October by the launch of its Airwallex Ushers in 'Agentic Banking Era' with New AI-Powered Business Accounts, which introduced the concept of AI agents managing corporate finance tasks.

The company has also been active in expanding its ecosystem through strategic integrations. Recent coverage includes Airwallex and Stigg Partner to Automate Global Payments and Product Access for AI Companies and an MOU to support the gaming sector, detailed in Airwallex and ONE Store Partner to Scale Korean Gaming Globally.

What this means

This partnership signals a shift in how fintechs use sports sponsorship. Moving beyond simple brand awareness, Airwallex is positioning its "Agentic Banking" stack as a mission-critical tool for high-stakes operations. By branding itself as an "AI Finance Partner," Airwallex is challenging traditional corporate banks that struggle with the speed of global, 24/7 industries like Formula 1. The move puts pressure on legacy providers to prove they can offer more than just credit lines and basic treasury. It raises a broader question for the sector: will AI-native infrastructure become the baseline requirement for global enterprises, or is "agentic banking" still a niche application for the most tech-forward organisations?
