Mercuryo has launched a fee-waiver initiative for new MetaMask users in Canada, removing significant barriers to entry for fiat-to-crypto transactions. For fintech professionals, this move signals a strategic push to capture market share in North America by lowering onboarding costs, while simultaneously providing data-driven insights into the evolving utility of stablecoins.

What was announced

Mercuryo is waiving its service fees for new MetaMask users located in Canada for a limited period. Between September 30, 2026, and October 31, 2026, individuals joining the platform can complete their first three on-ramp purchases without incurring Mercuryo’s standard transaction fees. This offer applies to all digital tokens currently available through the MetaMask mobile application and browser extension.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to simplify the transition from traditional fiat currency to digital assets. Alongside this promotion, Mercuryo collaborated with BNB Chain to release a research report titled Stablecoins on BNB Chain: Fiat to Crypto and Back. The findings highlight a dual-use case for stablecoins in the third quarter of 2026. According to the research, 77.4% of stablecoin transfers on the BNB Chain were valued at less than $100, suggesting significant retail activity and micro-transactions. Conversely, high-value transfers of $10,000 or more represented 66.2% of the total transfer value, indicating that the network is also heavily utilized for institutional-scale trading and liquidity management. This data underscores the versatility of stablecoin infrastructure in serving both everyday payments and capital market requirements.

"MetaMask is building a new kind of consumer financial experience, and we’re delighted to partner with them to give people more choice, flexibility and control over how they manage their money."

The companies involved

Mercuryo operates as a global payments infrastructure platform, focusing on bridging the gap between traditional banking systems and the cryptocurrency ecosystem. The firm provides a suite of tools for businesses to integrate fiat-to-crypto on-ramps and off-ramps, positioning itself as a critical layer for digital asset accessibility.

MetaMask is one of the world's most widely used self-custodial wallets, serving as a primary gateway to the decentralized web and various blockchain protocols. It is a product of ConsenSys, the prominent Ethereum software company founded by Joseph Lubin. By integrating with providers like Mercuryo, MetaMask allows its users to interact with decentralized applications while maintaining control over their private keys.

BNB Chain is a community-driven blockchain ecosystem that has evolved from its origins associated with the Binance exchange. It focuses on providing high-throughput and low-latency infrastructure for decentralized finance (DeFi) and other Web3 applications. The network has become a significant hub for stablecoin activity, as evidenced by the recent joint research with Mercuryo regarding transaction volumes and value distribution across its user base.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely monitored the expansion of the Canadian crypto market, recently reporting that Mercuryo Waives Crypto On-Ramp Fees for New MetaMask Users in Canada. The broader ecosystem surrounding BNB Chain has also seen significant activity; we covered how BNB Chain Appoints Thomas Chen as CBO to Drive Institutional Onchain Adoption to strengthen its market position. What this means

The decision to waive fees in the Canadian market reflects an intensifying battle for the "first mile" of crypto adoption. As the industry matures, the cost of moving money from a bank account into a digital wallet is becoming a primary competitive lever. By subsidizing these costs, infrastructure providers are betting that long-term user retention will outweigh short-term margin sacrifices. Furthermore, the data from the BNB Chain report suggests a bifurcated market: stablecoins are no longer just a "waiting room" for traders, but are functioning as a dual-purpose rail for both retail remittances and institutional liquidity. This puts traditional cross-border payment providers under increasing pressure to justify their fee structures against blockchain-based alternatives.
