Press Release: Unit Launches 24/7 Real-Time Payments to Eliminate Banking Calendar Delays | Featured Image by FF News

Unit has launched Real-Time Payments (RTP) capabilities, enabling fintech platforms to send and settle funds instantly 24/7/365. By connecting directly to The Clearing House, the move addresses a critical friction point in U.S. finance: the 114 days in 2026 when traditional ACH and wire systems do not settle due to weekends and federal holidays.

What was announced

Unit’s integration of the RTP rail allows for the immediate movement of money, bypassing the constraints of the traditional banking calendar. In the current U.S. landscape, ACH and wire transfers are restricted to business days, meaning that nearly one out of every three days sees no settlement activity. This delay often leaves businesses waiting until the following Monday or Tuesday for funds sent on a Friday evening or Saturday.

The new functionality is built directly into Unit’s existing infrastructure, connecting to The Clearing House without the need for an intermediary processor. This allows RTP to operate on the same Payments API, native ledger, and dashboard that Unit customers already use for ACH, wires, checks, and international payments. The technical implementation includes several features designed for institutional-grade reliability, such as a pre-send check to verify if a recipient’s bank is capable of receiving RTP. If a bank is not on the network, the system can be configured to automatically fall back to ACH.

Additional features include the support of the network’s specific rejection codes and transaction IDs, a "TimedOut" status for payments that do not immediately resolve, and the use of idempotent retries to prevent duplicate payments. Furthermore, the system allows for tags to carry order or invoice IDs directly onto the ledger entry, ensuring that incoming payments provide full sender account details for easier reconciliation. This allows a business to receive an RTP payment on a Sunday and have those funds available for card spending or other transfers within minutes.

The companies involved

Unit is a financial infrastructure platform that provides the technology for companies to embed banking services, including accounts, cards, and payments, into their own products. The company focuses on streamlining the complexity of the banking stack, offering a unified API and ledger system that allows developers to manage multiple payment rails through a single integration. By acting as the technical bridge between platforms and financial institutions, Unit has become a significant player in the Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) and embedded finance sectors.

The Clearing House (TCH) is the oldest banking association and payments company in the United States, owned by many of the world's largest commercial banks. It operates critical infrastructure that moves trillions of dollars daily, including the ACH network and the RTP network. Launched in 2017, the RTP network was the first new core payments infrastructure built in the U.S. in more than 40 years. Unlike legacy systems, TCH designed the RTP rail specifically for the digital age, providing 24/7 clearing and settlement with immediate availability of funds and integrated data messaging capabilities.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the evolution of the U.S. real-time payments landscape and the role of The Clearing House in modernizing financial infrastructure. We previously reported on how TCH and Quant Partner to Power US Tokenized Deposit Network for Banks, a move that signaled a shift toward more programmable and instant settlement layers. The momentum behind RTP has been building across the vendor ecosystem, as seen when Finzly Achieved RTP Network Certification for Request for Payment to drive pay-by-bank adoption. Additionally, the industry has seen a surge in supporting tools, such as when XMLdation Launched Buddy Bank™, a simulator for RTP testing, and Coinbax Launched Instant Payment Controls for both FedNow and RTP networks.

What this means

This announcement marks a significant step in the "de-banking" of the calendar. For years, fintechs have built sleek front-end experiences that were ultimately throttled by the 1970s-era settlement cycles of the legacy banking system. By integrating RTP directly into a unified ledger, Unit is effectively making "instant" the default expectation rather than a premium feature. This puts immense pressure on legacy BaaS providers and traditional banks that still rely on batch processing. The inclusion of a pre-send check is particularly vital; it acknowledges the fragmented nature of U.S. banking, where not every institution is yet RTP-capable, and provides a programmatic bridge to prevent transaction failure. The industry is clearly moving toward a state where the concept of a "business day" becomes irrelevant for liquidity.
