WHY THIS MATTERS:

The launch of SAP’s Open Payment Framework (OPF) with Adyen as the pioneer partner represents a significant shift in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) and commerce landscape. Historically, integrating sophisticated payment stacks into massive ERP systems like SAP was a grueling, multi-month engineering feat fraught with technical debt. By moving toward a cloud-native, "plug-and-play" framework, SAP is acknowledging that payments are no longer a peripheral utility but a core component of the customer experience that requires agility. For Adyen, being first-to-market here cements its status as the preferred financial backbone for the world’s largest enterprises. This move lowers the barrier for legacy retailers to adopt modern payment methods and unified commerce strategies, effectively neutralizing the technical advantage held by nimbler, digital-native competitors who aren't tethered to legacy infrastructure.

Adyen First to Market With Launch of SAP’s Open Payment Framework, Streamlining Payment Setup for Retailers

Amsterdam, 14 October 2025 – Adyen, the global financial technology platform of choice for leading businesses, and SAP, one of the world’s largest enterprise software providers, have announced the successful go-live of the SAP Commerce Cloud, Open Payment Framework (OPF). This new payment solution is designed to eliminate manual payment integrations and streamline the setup and payment service providers (PSPs) management. Freedom Furniture, one of Australia’s leading home retailers, is among the first merchants globally to implement the new solution.

Developed in partnership between SAP and Adyen, the Open Payment Framework allows retailers to accelerate time to market with fully integrated ecommerce payment capabilities. As a pre-built, cloud-native extension for SAP Commerce Cloud, OPF enables seamless deployment, faster reconciliation, and access to Adyen’s full suite of payment methods without extensive development work.

“At Adyen, we’re focused on providing enterprise retailers with scalable, future-proof payment infrastructure,” said Nadia Qureshi, Global Head of Partnerships at Adyen.

“Being the first PSP live on OPF reflects our commitment to collaborating with SAP and assisting merchants in modernizing their payments stack with minimal integration effort.” said Nadia Qureshi, Global Head of Partnerships at Adyen.

With over 60 retail locations and a growing ecommerce business, Freedom Furniture’s adoption of OPF positions them at the forefront of digital transformation in retail. The new integration supports the company’s omnichannel ambitions by reducing complexity and time-to-market across the entire payments lifecycle.

“Freedom Furniture is a great example of how retailers can benefit from comprehensive, out-of-the-box integrations between SAP Commerce Cloud and leading technology partners,” said Marcus Schreiner, Global Vice President SAP Customer Experience – Partner & Ecosystem Strategy.

“With Open Payment Framework, merchants can accelerate innovation, lower integration costs, and offer their customers a superior and seamless payment experience.” said Marcus Schreiner, Global Vice President SAP Customer Experience – Partner & Ecosystem Strategy.

The Open Payment Framework is now available to SAP Commerce Cloud merchants globally. SAP and Adyen plan to continue their close collaboration on embedded payments across SAP’s ecosystem, including future extensions into AI use cases, customer loyalty and financial services.

FF NEWS TAKE:

This isn't just another partnership; it’s a direct attack on the friction that has plagued enterprise retail for decades. By removing the 'manual' from payment integration, Adyen and SAP are effectively commoditizing the technical setup, forcing competitors to compete on performance and data rather than just connectivity. It moves the needle by proving that even the largest, most complex retail ecosystems can achieve the speed of a startup when the underlying infrastructure is truly unified.
