WHY THIS MATTERS:

The integration of Pay by Bank into a major telco like Vodafone Germany marks a significant milestone for Open Banking adoption in Europe. For years, Account-to-Account (A2A) payments have been touted as the primary challenger to the dominance of card schemes, yet mass-market penetration has often lagged behind the hype. By embedding Tink’s connectivity and Adyen’s processing power into the billing cycle of millions of telecom subscribers, this partnership moves A2A from a niche fintech experiment to a mainstream utility. For Vodafone, the move reduces the friction and high interchange fees associated with traditional card payments, while offering a more secure, direct-from-bank experience for the consumer. In the broader competitive landscape, this reinforces the trend of 'invisible' finance, where payment methods are becoming deeply integrated into essential service providers, further eroding the traditional barrier between banking and telecommunications.

Tink and Adyen partner to bring Pay by Bank to Vodafone customers in Germany

Adyen, the global financial technology platform of choice for leading businesses, and Tink, A Visa Solution, and have announced a partnership with Vodafone, a leading telecoms company, to offer their customers in Germany the option to pay their prepaid tariff and outstanding postpaid balances using Pay by Bank.

Pay by Bank is the commonly used term for the open banking-powered payment method that allows consumers to quickly transfer money directly from one bank account to another.

"We’re pleased to work with two leading fintechs in Tink and Adyen to offer this new payment method for some of our customers in Germany. The simplicity and security of Pay by Bank provides a great option." said Michael Reinartz, Director Innovation at Vodafone.

The Pay by Bank payment method is facilitated by the long-standing partnership between Tink, a market-leader open banking platform, and Adyen, who provide end-to-end payments capabilities, data-driven insights, and financial products in a single global solution.

"Ever since our first discussions with Vodafone at an event in Dusseldorf, we’ve been excited at the potential of this partnership and look forward to working with them alongside our long-time partner Adyen." said Thomas Gmelch, Head of Commercial Central Europe at Tink.

"We are delighted to introduce Pay by Bank for Vodafone customers thanks to our partnership with Tink - enabling payments directly from the bank account. We are seeing a growing need for this convenient payment method. With the integration, we support companies in making the checkout as user-oriented as possible and thus sustainably increasing conversion." said Hella Fuhrmann, Country Manager DACH at Adyen.

FF NEWS TAKE:

This is a heavyweight alliance that genuinely moves the needle for Open Banking in the DACH region. While many 'Pay by Bank' announcements involve smaller merchants, bringing a giant like Vodafone into the fold provides the scale necessary to change consumer habits. Adyen and Tink are proving that the real future of payments isn't just about new tech, but about strategic distribution through the world's largest recurring billers.
