Adyen and SAP Debut Open Payment Framework to Revolutionize Retail Integration

WHY THIS MATTERS:
The launch of SAP’s Open Payment Framework (OPF) with Adyen as the inaugural partner marks a significant shift in the enterprise resource planning (ERP) and commerce landscape. Historically, integrating sophisticated payment stacks into heavy enterprise software like SAP Commerce Cloud was a resource-intensive, manual endeavor that created bottlenecks for global retailers. By moving toward a cloud-native, 'plug-and-play' framework, SAP is effectively commoditizing the integration layer, allowing merchants to bypass the 'integration tax' and focus on localized payment methods and conversion optimization. For Adyen, being the first-to-market partner solidifies its position as the preferred financial backbone for the world’s largest retailers. This move signals a broader industry trend where embedded finance is no longer just about adding a checkout button, but about deep architectural alignment between commerce platforms and fintech providers to enable true omnichannel agility.
Adyen First to Market With Launch of SAP’s Open Payment Framework, Streamlining Payment Setup for Retailers
Amsterdam, 14 October 2025 – Adyen, the global financial technology platform of choice for leading businesses, and SAP, one of the world’s largest enterprise software providers, have announced the successful go-live of the SAP Commerce Cloud, Open Payment Framework (OPF). This new payment solution is designed to eliminate manual payment integrations and streamline the setup and payment service providers (PSPs) management. Freedom Furniture, one of Australia’s leading home retailers, is among the first merchants globally to implement the new solution.
Developed in partnership between SAP and Adyen, the Open Payment Framework allows retailers to accelerate time to market with fully integrated ecommerce payment capabilities. As a pre-built, cloud-native extension for SAP Commerce Cloud, OPF enables seamless deployment, faster reconciliation, and access to Adyen’s full suite of payment methods without extensive development work.
“At Adyen, we’re focused on providing enterprise retailers with scalable, future-proof payment infrastructure,” said Nadia Qureshi, Global Head of Partnerships at Adyen.
“Being the first PSP live on OPF reflects our commitment to collaborating with SAP and assisting merchants in modernizing their payments stack with minimal integration effort,” added Nadia Qureshi, Global Head of Partnerships at Adyen.
With over 60 retail locations and a growing ecommerce business, Freedom Furniture’s adoption of OPF positions them at the forefront of digital transformation in retail. The new integration supports the company’s omnichannel ambitions by reducing complexity and time-to-market across the entire payments lifecycle.
“Freedom Furniture is a great example of how retailers can benefit from comprehensive, out-of-the-box integrations between SAP Commerce Cloud and leading technology partners,” said Marcus Schreiner, Global Vice President SAP Customer Experience – Partner & Ecosystem Strategy.
“With Open Payment Framework, merchants can accelerate innovation, lower integration costs, and offer their customers a superior and seamless payment experience,” stated Marcus Schreiner, Global Vice President SAP Customer Experience – Partner & Ecosystem Strategy.
The Open Payment Framework is now available to SAP Commerce Cloud merchants globally. SAP and Adyen plan to continue their close collaboration on embedded payments across SAP’s ecosystem, including future extensions into AI use cases, customer loyalty and financial services.
FF NEWS TAKE:
This partnership definitely moves the needle by removing the friction that has long plagued enterprise-level digital transformations. While many fintechs claim 'seamless integration,' the SAP-Adyen OPF actually delivers it at the architectural level. For retailers like Freedom Furniture, the ability to deploy global payment capabilities without a massive engineering overhead is a competitive game-changer. Adyen’s first-mover advantage here makes them the 'default' choice for the massive SAP ecosystem.
