Press Release: Wio Bank Becomes First UAE Issuer to Auto-Enable Mastercard Click to Pay | Featured Image by FF News

Wio Bank has become the first issuer in the UAE to auto-enable Mastercard’s Click to Pay for its cardholders, removing the manual enrollment barrier for online transactions. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant shift toward frictionless e-commerce in the Middle East, leveraging network tokenization and biometric passkeys to replace traditional passwords.

What was announced

The partnership introduces a streamlined, passwordless checkout experience for Wio Bank customers across the UAE. By integrating Mastercard’s Click to Pay solution, the bank allows users to complete online purchases without the need to manually input card details or remember complex passwords. The system is built on EMVCo® authentication standards and utilizes Mastercard’s network tokenization technology, which replaces sensitive 16-digit card numbers with unique digital tokens that are useless if intercepted.

A central feature of this rollout is the Mastercard Payment Passkey service. This technology utilizes device-based biometrics—such as facial recognition or fingerprint scans—to authenticate transactions securely. By eliminating the reliance on one-time passcodes (OTPs) and traditional passwords, the solution aims to reduce cart abandonment and enhance the speed of the payment journey. Because sensitive payment data is not shared with third-party merchants during the process, the risk of data breaches is significantly mitigated.

The initiative targets a rapidly evolving digital economy in the Middle East. According to data from a recent report by Mastercard and Checkout.com, token adoption among merchants in the MENA region has grown by 345%. This deployment aligns with a broader global strategy to achieve a fully tokenized and authenticated e-commerce ecosystem by 2030. The Click to Pay service is designed to be interoperable, functioning across various devices, browsers, and an expanding network of global merchants.

"Wio Bank is committed to bringing efficiency into day-to-day transactions. With its innovative solutions powered by advanced technology, Mastercard enables us to offer streamlined, user-friendly payment journeys. The auto-enablement of Click to Pay will allow our customers to complete their e-commerce purchases with a single click and with added peace of mind,"

Prateek Vahie, Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) at Wio Bank.

In the Middle East, Mastercard’s operations are led by executives such as Gina Petersen-Skyrme, who serves as senior vice president and country manager for the UAE and Oman. The company is currently leading a global effort to phase out manual card entry and passwords in favor of tokenized, biometric-based authentication to secure the future of digital commerce.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively covered Mastercard’s expanding role in the global payments and digital asset ecosystem. Recently, the network has been instrumental in scaling new financial technologies, such as when SoFi Bank Scales Stablecoin Settlement to $25B via Mastercard Network. The company’s influence also extends into retail-specific financial products, highlighted by the report on how Kroger Partners with Imprint and Mastercard to Launch High-Yield Rewards Credit Card. Additionally, Mastercard’s infrastructure continues to support the integration of artificial intelligence and real-time processing, as seen when LoanPro Launches AI Servicing Agents and Real-Time Card Disbursements for Lenders and Corpay Expands AI Agent Suite to Automate Corporate Spend and Accounting Workflows.

What this means

The auto-enablement of Click to Pay marks a decisive move against the "friction tax" that has long hindered conversion rates in MENA e-commerce. By bypassing the manual enrollment phase, Wio Bank and Mastercard are forcing a shift in consumer expectations; once users experience biometric, one-click checkouts, the traditional OTP-heavy process will feel obsolete. This puts immediate pressure on other regional issuers to accelerate their own tokenization roadmaps or risk losing transaction volume to more seamless competitors. The broader industry question now is how quickly merchants can integrate these passkey standards to match the issuer-side readiness, as the success of a passwordless future depends entirely on ecosystem-wide adoption.
