Tourism Malaysia and Alipay+ have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to digitalise the nation’s tourism economy ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026–2027. By integrating AI-driven travel tools and cross-border payment capabilities, the partnership aims to drive international spending directly toward local SMEs and regional operators, streamlining the digital journey for millions of global travellers.

What was announced

The collaboration focuses on accelerating cross-border commerce through the Alipay+ global wallet ecosystem. A central feature is the introduction of Alipay+ Voyager, an AI travel agent embedded within digital wallets. This tool provides travellers with verified cultural and culinary recommendations and allows them to book local ride-hailing services without downloading external apps. To incentivise exploration, Tourism Malaysia is launching an AI-powered travel subsidy programme, enabling visitors to interact with the digital agent to unlock discounts on accommodation and transport.

The initiative targets the Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 (VM2026–2027) period, aiming to distribute visitor spending beyond major urban hubs. Local merchants will gain access to an SME growth engine featuring exclusive campaigns offering 20% savings via PayNet’s DuitNow. This strategic distribution is intended to support the broader economic goals of the multi-year tourism campaign.

The MoU follows significant growth for Alipay+ in the region. In the first half of 2026, over 600,000 Malaysian merchants—mostly SMEs—received payments from Alipay+ partner wallets and bank apps, representing a 70% year-on-year increase. Furthermore, inbound QR transactions via DuitNow surged by more than 60%. Alipay+ currently connects over 2 billion user accounts with 150 million merchants across 210 destinations, operating through national schemes like PayNet to facilitate seamless cross-border transactions.

"Digital technologies continue to reshape the way people plan and experience travel, and Tourism Malaysia remains committed to embracing innovative solutions that enhance visitor convenience and engagement. This initiative makes it easier for travellers to discover Malaysia and access tourism-related benefits through a seamless digital journey, supporting our broader efforts under VM2026–2027 to strengthen Malaysia's competitiveness as a smart tourism destination. By leveraging digital platforms with extensive international reach, we can engage travellers more effectively while showcasing Malaysia's diverse tourism experiences to a wider global audience."

Mr. Mohd Amirul Rizal Abdul Rahim, Director General of Tourism Malaysia.

The companies involved

Alipay+ is a suite of cross-border digital payment and marketing solutions operated by Ant International. It acts as a unified gateway, allowing businesses to accept various international mobile wallets and banking apps through a single interface. Ant International is a division of Ant Group, the Chinese fintech giant. Alipay+ has positioned itself as a critical bridge for merchants in Asia and beyond, seeking to capture the spending power of mobile-first travellers by integrating with major national payment schemes.

Tourism Malaysia is the government agency responsible for promoting the country as a premier international destination. Its current strategic focus is the Visit Malaysia 2026–2027 campaign, which seeks to revitalise the tourism sector and enhance the country's standing as a smart tourism destination.

Ant International has been aggressively expanding its footprint across the Asia-Pacific region, often through its Antom brand and strategic partnerships with national payment switches. By integrating with local schemes like Malaysia’s DuitNow, the company provides a scalable infrastructure for cross-border QR payments, connecting millions of merchants to a global user base of over 2 billion accounts.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked Ant International’s expansion and its focus on AI-native payment infrastructure. Recently, Google Gemini and Antom Partner to Scale Google AI Plus Access Across Asia, highlighting the company’s push into AI integration. The firm also recently moved to Antom Unifies Southeast Asian Leadership to Scale AI-Native Payment Infrastructure, a move designed to streamline regional operations.

In the merchant space, DOKU Rebrands as Antom Deepens Strategic Investment in Indonesian Fintech Leader, showcasing Ant’s strategy of deepening ties with local payment giants. Additionally, the company continues to expand its consumer reach, as seen when i-Aurora and Alipay+ Partner to Scale Global QR Payments for K-Pop Fans.

What this means

This partnership signals a shift in how national tourism boards view payment providers—moving from simple transaction facilitators to active discovery engines. By embedding an AI travel agent directly into the wallet, Ant International is attempting to own the entire travel lifecycle, from planning to payment. This puts significant pressure on traditional travel agencies and standalone tourism apps that lack the massive, pre-existing user base of the Alipay+ ecosystem. For the broader fintech sector, the success of the DuitNow integration raises questions about whether national payment switches will eventually become the primary rails for all cross-border retail commerce, potentially sidelining traditional card networks in the Southeast Asian corridor.
