Press Release: Tipalti 2026 Index: AI Adoption Triples in Finance but Workloads Continue to Surge | Featured Image by FF News

Tipalti’s 2026 Global Finance Outlook Index reveals a sharp rise in AI adoption, with fully automated accounts payable operations quadrupling in a year. For fintech leaders, this highlights a critical gap: while technology implementation is surging, finance teams remain overwhelmed by manual workloads and economic volatility, making the transition to agentic AI a matter of operational survival.

What was announced

The second annual 2026 Global Finance Outlook Index, based on a survey of more than 2,100 finance professionals across North America and Europe, details a significant acceleration in automation. Fully automated accounts payable (AP) operations rose from 7% in 2025 to 31% in 2026, while the adoption of AI-powered tools and agents surged from 14% to 46% over the same period. Despite this, the report identifies a "disconnect" between implementation and maturity; while 31% of respondents describe their operations as fully automated, 66% admit their automation is limited to OCR and invoice digitisation. Only 6% have reached the stage of fully automated operations powered by agentic AI.

The research highlights the tangible benefits for those who have successfully integrated these technologies. Nearly half (48%) of organisations report significant time savings, 33% have achieved faster invoice coding or approvals, and 30% have accelerated their month-end close—a 31% increase compared to 2025 data. However, external pressures are mounting. Global economic shifts have increased volatility in financial forecasts for 78% of respondents, and uncertainty regarding trade policy and tariffs has slowed growth plans for 52% of firms. Consequently, only 30% of organisations plan to expand into new countries over the next two years, a 14% drop from the previous year.

Security and compliance remain primary hurdles. Data security (36%) and accuracy (33%) are the leading barriers to further AP automation. Furthermore, 73% of finance professionals cite cyber threats as a major concern, yet only 21% are very confident that their current processes would detect a fraudulent vendor payment change before funds are disbursed.

The companies involved

Tipalti is an agentic AI platform specifically built for finance operations, with a primary focus on automating the entire accounts payable and global partner payment lifecycle. Headquartered in Foster City, California, the company has positioned itself as a critical infrastructure provider for high-growth businesses navigating the complexities of international payments, tax compliance, and regulatory requirements. Tipalti’s platform is designed to handle the "last mile" of finance, moving beyond simple digitisation to provide end-to-end control over global disbursements.

The company has seen significant momentum in the mid-market and enterprise sectors, supported by substantial capital injections to fuel its technological roadmap. In late 2025, Tipalti secured $200 million in growth financing to accelerate its development of AI-driven finance tools. This followed a period of aggressive geographic expansion, including a formal entry into the Canadian market in late 2024. By integrating advanced security features and AI-driven compliance checks, Tipalti competes in a crowded fintech landscape by emphasizing "agentic" capabilities—systems that can act with a degree of autonomy to reduce the manual burden on finance departments.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Tipalti’s evolution from a payments processor to an AI-centric finance platform. In July 2026, the publication covered the Tipalti Report: Outdated Payout Infrastructure Stalling Global Business Growth for 47% of Firms, which highlighted how legacy systems were actively hindering international expansion. That same month, FF News reported on how Tipalti Integrates Flagright AI to Strengthen Global AML Compliance and Payout Security, a move aimed at addressing the fraud concerns highlighted in the latest index. Prior to these developments, the company’s financial trajectory was marked by a major milestone when Tipalti Secures $200 Million in Growth Financing To Drive Next Wave of AI Innovation in Finance in September 2025. This funding followed the company's efforts to broaden its footprint, as seen when Tipalti Accelerates International Growth with Canadian Expansion in December 2024.

What this means

The findings suggest the fintech sector is entering a "post-implementation" phase where the mere presence of AI no longer provides a competitive edge. The industry is currently facing a paradox: automation is rising, yet manual workloads for finance professionals are actually increasing, with ten hours a week still lost to repetitive tasks. This indicates that first-generation automation—largely focused on OCR and basic digitisation—has reached its limit. The market is now under pressure to deliver "agentic" solutions that can handle decision-making and fraud detection autonomously. For vendors, the challenge is no longer just technical capability, but building the "trust layer" required for finance leaders to hand over control in a volatile economic climate.
