Stripe and Plasma Launch Multi-Currency Stablecoin Cards for Global Spending
By Lauren Towner · 19 October 2026

Stripe and Plasma have partnered to launch multi-currency stablecoin cards, designed to streamline cross-border spending for both individuals and businesses. By integrating stablecoin assets with traditional fiat balances, the collaboration aims to eliminate the friction of foreign exchange costs and provide fintech firms with the infrastructure to offer global payment tools.
What was announced
The collaboration introduces a multi-currency card experience that allows cardholders to spend using the currencies they already hold, significantly reducing the need for unnecessary conversions. Plasma is serving as the design partner for the initiative, working with Stripe to develop a card product tailored for users whose financial lives span multiple countries and asset classes. A key feature of the new infrastructure is the ability to spend directly in a local currency; for example, a cardholder holding Euros can complete a transaction in that currency without first converting the balance into US Dollars.
Stripe is expanding its existing stablecoin card infrastructure to support a broader range of assets and geographies. The system currently supports fiat currencies including the US Dollar (USD), Brazilian Real (BRL), Euro (EUR), Mexican Peso (MXN), and Colombian Peso (COP). On the digital asset side, the cards support OUSD and eligible GENIUS-ready stablecoins. While the service is currently available in over 30 countries, the partners have outlined a significant expansion roadmap with the goal of reaching more than 100 countries by 2027.
The partnership also focuses on business utility, allowing companies to issue cards denominated in specific currencies that match their operational spending needs. Future developments in the collaboration are expected to enable cardholders to spend across multiple balances simultaneously, with the system automatically selecting the appropriate currency at the point of purchase.
"Stablecoins make it possible to hold and move money globally. We're working with Plasma to bring that same flexibility to spending, giving businesses the infrastructure to offer cards across currencies and markets without having to build it themselves."

By acting as a design partner for Stripe’s multi-currency infrastructure, Plasma is positioning itself at the intersection of traditional finance and the emerging stablecoin economy. While Plasma is a newer entrant to the market compared to its partner, its focus on the "borderless" consumer aligns with the broader industry trend toward financial globalization and the reduction of traditional banking friction.
What FF News has reported before
Stripe has been a frequent subject of coverage at FF News, reflecting its aggressive expansion across various sectors of the financial industry. In October 2026, we reported that Wix Integrates Stripe’s Link to Enable AI Agent Payments for Small Businesses, showcasing the company's move into automated commerce. Shortly before that, Stoa Partners with Stripe and Mastercard to Launch Virtual Card Perks for Savers, illustrating Stripe's role in the virtual card issuance space. We also covered major strategic alliances, such as when FedEx and Stripe Forge Strategic Alliance to Unlock SMB Financing and Global Payments, and the company's participation in the Meta and Sierra Launch Personal Agent Protocol with Stripe, Shopify, and Walmart.
What this means
This announcement signals a significant shift in how stablecoins are positioned within the payments ecosystem, moving them from speculative digital assets to practical tools for everyday commerce. By bypassing the "USD-first" conversion model, Stripe is placing direct pressure on traditional foreign exchange providers and legacy banks that rely on high FX spreads for revenue. The infrastructure-first approach lowers the barrier for smaller fintechs to offer sophisticated, multi-currency products. However, the ambitious plan to scale to 100 countries by 2027 raises critical questions regarding how the sector will navigate the highly fragmented and evolving global regulatory landscape for stablecoin-backed instruments.
