Meta and Sierra Launch Personal Agent Protocol with Stripe, Shopify, and Walmart
By Lauren Towner · 8 October 2026

Meta and Sierra have introduced the Personal Agent Protocol, an open standard designed to formalise how AI agents interact with businesses. By establishing a direct, secure connection for authentication and task execution, the protocol aims to move beyond inefficient web scraping, providing fintechs and retailers with visibility into automated consumer actions.
What was announced
The Personal Agent Protocol is an open standard developed by Meta and Sierra in collaboration with industry partners including Genesys, Instinct, Rocket, Shopify, Stripe, and Walmart. It addresses the friction caused by personal AI agents that currently navigate websites like human users—loading pages, clicking through forms, or contacting support lines—which often leads to task failure or security concerns for the enterprise.
The protocol is designed to handle authentication and empower consumers while giving brands visibility into agent activity. It operates on the principle that consumers control access levels, deciding whether an agent has read-only or write access, while companies set parameters for what those agents can perform. Built on the OAuth standard, the protocol allows for persistent sessions across different channels, ensuring that a guest query and a post-login transaction are treated as part of the same visit.
A personal agent can discover a company’s offerings via its website and initiate a session. For tasks requiring account access, users can sign in through the company’s page or use pre-existing credentials. The protocol supports three primary interaction routes: standard website navigation, direct API connections using standards such as MCP and OpenAPI, or interaction with a company’s own internal AI agent for complex tasks like warranty claims. The partners plan to publish the v0.1 specification later this month, alongside design workshops and a reference implementation for developers.
"A customer relationship doesn’t start or end at checkout. When customers send an agent, they expect the same service they’d get themselves. We’re contributing to the Personal Agent Protocol to give businesses a standard way to recognize their customers’ agents, efficiently interact with them, and shape their customer relationships."

The companies involved
The initiative is led by Meta, the social media and technology giant formerly known as Facebook, which has a significant footprint in AI development and open-source software. Joining them is Sierra, a firm focused on conversational AI. The partnership includes major players in the commerce and payments sectors, most notably Stripe and Shopify. Stripe is a dominant force in the global payments infrastructure market, providing the financial backbone for millions of businesses, while Shopify provides the essential internet infrastructure for commerce, powering millions of merchants worldwide.
Other partners include Walmart, the world's largest retailer by revenue, and Genesys, a leader in cloud-based customer experience orchestration. Rocket Companies, the parent of Rocket Mortgage, and Instinct are also contributing to the standard. This coalition represents a broad cross-section of the digital economy, from social media and retail to fintech and customer service software. The involvement of these firms suggests an attempt to create a universal standard that prevents the fragmentation of the "agentic" web before it becomes the primary mode of consumer interaction.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has extensively tracked the evolution of the partner companies, particularly Stripe’s expanding ecosystem and its moves into automated financial services. Recent coverage includes ExpenseIn and Stripe Launch Automated Reimbursements to Streamline Business Expense Management, which highlighted the move toward automated financial workflows. The publication also reported on Polygon Launches Checkout: Seamless Stablecoin Payments for Stripe Merchants and the strategic move where Stripe to Acquire Parafin to Boost Embedded Credit for Small Businesses. Additionally, the global expansion of local payment methods was covered in BLIK Goes Global: Stripe Integration Expands Polish Payment Method to 30+ Countries. These developments underscore a market trend toward interoperability and automated service delivery.
What this means
The introduction of a formal protocol for AI agents marks a shift from the "wild west" of web scraping to a structured, API-first economy. For the fintech sector, this moves the needle on security; if agents can authenticate via OAuth rather than holding raw user credentials, the risk profile of automated finance changes significantly. However, this puts pressure on smaller merchants and legacy financial institutions that may lack the technical infrastructure to implement these standards. The industry must now consider whether this protocol will become a true open standard or if it will inadvertently create a "walled garden" where only major platforms can effectively communicate with consumer agents.
