StraitsX has partnered with Visa to expand its card issuing capabilities to more than 100 markets globally. This move allows fintechs and digital asset providers to link stablecoin balances directly to Visa’s merchant network, bridging the gap between digital assets and traditional retail payments for businesses operating across diverse international jurisdictions.

What was announced

The partnership marks a significant transition for StraitsX, moving its card issuing infrastructure from a regional focus in Asia to a global scale. The new capabilities are specifically designed for fintech companies, Digital Payment Token (DPT) service providers, and digital wallet operators. These entities can now build card programs that utilize stablecoins for the underlying funding and settlement flows, while cardholders use standard Visa credentials at any merchant that accepts Visa.

This expansion is supported by StraitsX’s existing track record in Asia, where the company has already reached an annualized card Gross Transaction Value (GTV) exceeding US$6 billion through its stablecoin-backed card programs. By leveraging Visa’s global acceptance network, StraitsX aims to provide a single infrastructure partner for businesses that need to manage digital asset payment flows across multiple markets simultaneously.

The rollout is subject to applicable regulatory and compliance requirements in each jurisdiction, as well as Visa’s own internal standards. A key component of the integration involves addressing the evolving nature of money laundering and terrorism financing risks. StraitsX and Visa have indicated that the collaboration includes specific measures to mitigate these risks as stablecoin-native infrastructure becomes more deeply integrated with traditional financial networks. The infrastructure is also being positioned to support emerging commerce types, such as payments initiated by AI agents.

The companies involved

Visa is the global leader in digital payments, facilitating transactions between consumers, merchants, financial institutions, and government entities across more than 200 countries and territories. As a dominant incumbent in the payments space, Visa has increasingly focused on integrating new payment technologies, including stablecoins and blockchain rails, into its existing global financial system to maintain its market position and ensure scalability.

StraitsX is a stablecoin-native settlement layer designed to power global finance through digital asset infrastructure. Based in Singapore, the company provides the technical framework for payments and settlements using digital value. While it has established a significant footprint in the Asian market, particularly through its stablecoin-backed card programs, this partnership with Visa represents its most aggressive move toward global market penetration. StraitsX functions as a bridge between the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem and traditional financial institutions, providing the tools necessary for businesses to move digital value across borders without requiring merchants to change their existing payment acceptance methods.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed Visa’s aggressive expansion into the digital asset and stablecoin sectors. Recently, the publication covered how Visa Scales Stablecoin Strategy with Commercial Launch of Visa Direct Prefunding, signaling a shift from pilot programs to full-scale product offerings. This follows other major crypto-linked initiatives, such as when Gate and Visa Launch Crypto-Linked Card Across 40+ Global Markets. Beyond digital assets, Visa continues to strengthen its traditional and domestic footprints, as seen when Visa Secures PBOC Approval to Prepare for Domestic Bankcard Clearing in China and through regional collaborations like the one where Visa and Barclaycard Payments Launch Unified Checkout to Simplify UK Merchant Payments.

What this means

This announcement moves the needle for stablecoins by transforming them from speculative assets or back-end settlement tools into a viable medium for daily retail exchange. By utilizing Visa’s rails, StraitsX effectively bypasses the "merchant adoption" hurdle that has historically plagued crypto payments. Traditional banks and legacy payment processors are now under increased pressure; if they cannot offer similar stablecoin-to-fiat bridges, they risk losing fintech clients to more agile infrastructure providers. However, the expansion into 100 markets raises significant questions regarding fragmented global regulation. How StraitsX navigates the varying legal definitions of "stablecoins" across these jurisdictions will determine if this infrastructure can truly achieve the seamless global utility it promises.
