Paymentology and Maxim have partnered to launch a new credit card programme in the UK, specifically targeting the Nigerian diaspora. For fintech professionals, this move highlights the growing importance of cross-border financial identity and the use of cloud-native issuer processing to serve "credit invisible" populations who are often overlooked by traditional lenders.

What was announced

Maxim, the borderless credit platform, officially entered the UK market with a launch event held at the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal Football Club, on 27 August. The company has partnered with global issuer processor Paymentology to provide the underlying infrastructure for its new credit card programme. This initiative is designed to solve the "credit invisible" problem, which Experian estimates affects more than five million people in the UK who lack sufficient credit history for mainstream financial services providers.

During the launch event, Paymentology's Global Head of Partnerships, Merusha Naidu, joined Maxim CEO Ibrahim Oladele to discuss how modern payments infrastructure can create more inclusive financial products. The programme initially focuses on the Nigerian diaspora, offering credit cards to both newcomers with limited UK credit history and established residents. By utilizing Paymentology’s cloud-native Lume platform, Maxim can deliver the processing capabilities needed to support its UK card programme while building a foundation for future growth.

The card includes a bespoke rewards ecosystem tailored to the African diaspora. Unlike traditional rewards programmes, Maxim’s points-based system allows users to earn and redeem points on African restaurants, music events, live entertainment, transport, cinema, theatre, football tickets, and shipping services between the UK and Nigeria. Maxim is already operational in Nigeria, where it provides interest-free credit. This UK expansion represents a step toward building a continuous financial experience for Africans moving between markets, supporting customers across different stages of their financial journeys.

"Moving to a new country should not mean leaving your financial identity behind. Too many talented and ambitious people arrive in the UK with years of experience and financial history, only to find that none of it counts. Maxim is building a more connected financial journey for Africans living across borders, beginning with credit cards that help customers establish their financial footprint while accessing rewards that genuinely reflect their lives. Paymentology shares our belief that financial products should be built around the people using them, making them the right partner to help us bring that vision to life."

The companies involved

Paymentology is a global issuer processor that provides the technical backbone for banks, digital banks, and fintechs to issue and manage card programmes. Its cloud-native Lume platform is active in over 68 countries, offering a combination of global reach and local market expertise. The firm specializes in providing flexible, scalable technology that allows financial institutions to launch and evolve differentiated card products. Paymentology’s role in the market is defined by its ability to support ambitious fintechs through modern issuer processing capabilities that handle complex cross-border requirements.

Maxim is a borderless credit platform specifically designed for the African diaspora. By focusing on the financial identity of individuals moving across borders, the company aims to bridge the gap between established financial histories in Africa and the requirements of credit systems in new markets like the UK. Maxim seeks to ensure that moving to a new country does not require individuals to leave their financial identity behind.

Experian is a global information services group and a major player in the UK credit market. The company provides data and analytical tools to help businesses manage credit risk and prevent fraud. Its research into the "credit invisible" population highlights a significant segment of the UK market—over five million individuals—who are currently excluded from traditional financial services due to a lack of accessible credit data.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked Experian’s efforts to modernize digital verification and address market challenges. In July 2026, the company launched Experian Launches Identity Connect to Streamline UK Digital Verification and Fraud Prevention, a tool designed to simplify the verification process for UK consumers. This followed the company's strategic move to enhance its verification stack, as reported in Experian UK&I Strengthens Its Leading Digital Verification Capabilities With the Addition of Konfir. What this means

This partnership signals a shift toward "identity portability" in the credit market. Traditional UK lenders are under increasing pressure to adapt to a globalized workforce that possesses wealth and history but lacks local data. By targeting the Nigerian diaspora specifically, Maxim is challenging the "one-size-fits-all" credit scoring model. The success of this model raises questions for the wider sector: will established banks begin to integrate international credit data, or will they continue to cede this high-value migrant segment to specialized fintechs? The reliance on cloud-native processing suggests that speed and niche reward structures are becoming the primary battlegrounds for customer loyalty in the credit space.
