MoonPay Launches PayBox in Grok to Expand Agentic AI Payments Beyond Claude and ChatGPT
2 September 2026

MoonPay has launched PayBox on Grok, enabling the AI assistant to execute financial transactions directly through natural language commands. For fintech professionals, this represents a critical shift from AI as a purely informational tool to an active transactional agent, bridging the gap between conversational interfaces and self-custodial digital asset management without relinquishing user control.
What was announced
PayBox functions as a payment vault specifically designed for the requirements of AI agents. By connecting Grok to a user’s self-custodial wallets and payment cards, the system allows users to initiate complex financial actions—such as onramping $100 into PYUSD, swapping assets for SOL, or bridging funds to the Robinhood Chain—simply by typing the request. Beyond crypto-native actions, the integration supports real-world services like booking flights or making dinner reservations through the x402 open standard for agent-initiated payments.
The technical backbone of PayBox utilizes Multi-Party Computation (MPC) and Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) to ensure that no single party, including MoonPay or the AI agent, ever has full access to private keys. Card transactions are processed via Visa’s agentic commerce protocol, which allows the AI to facilitate payments without ever seeing the raw card data. This security model is powered by infrastructure from Sodot, which MoonPay acquired earlier in 2026. The system currently supports a wide array of networks, including Solana and EVM-compatible chains such as Ethereum, Hyperliquid, Tempo, Base, Robinhood Chain, Arbitrum, and Polygon. Users maintain control through two distinct permission settings: Always Ask, requiring a passkey for every move, and Autonomous, which permits the AI to act within pre-defined limits chosen by the user.
"AI is quickly becoming the interface through which people navigate the internet, and payments need to work wherever those conversations happen. Bringing PayBox to Grok is another step toward a world where people can ask an AI to move, trade, or spend money as naturally as they ask it a question, without giving up control of their funds."
Ivan Soto-Wright, CEO and Founder of MoonPay.
The companies involved
MoonPay is a global financial technology firm that focuses on the movement of value between fiat currencies and digital assets. The company has aggressively expanded its infrastructure, notably through the 2026 acquisition of Sodot. Sodot’s key management technology is a significant pillar of the current digital asset market, securing more than 10 million wallets and over $50 billion in assets for various cryptocurrency enterprises. This infrastructure now serves as the foundation for the PayBox vault system.
Grok, the AI platform receiving this integration, joins ChatGPT and Claude as the third major conversational assistant to support PayBox since its initial launch in July. The involvement of Visa highlights the intersection of traditional finance and AI, as the payments giant provides the underlying agentic commerce protocol used to secure card data. Additionally, the integration touches on emerging ecosystems like the Robinhood Chain and Kamino, a platform used for earning yield on stablecoins like USDC. This ecosystem approach positions MoonPay as a middleware layer between fragmented decentralized finance protocols and the increasingly centralized interfaces of major AI models.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely monitored the evolution of these integrated financial ecosystems and the rise of agentic commerce. We recently covered how Tria Integrates Robinhood Chain to Enable Real-World Asset Spending via Tria Card, highlighting the growing utility of the Robinhood ecosystem. The trend of AI-driven financial services was also evident in our report on how TradePMR by Robinhood Partners with Artha for AI-Driven Portfolio Optimization. Furthermore, the broader context of digital asset adoption is reflected in our reporting on the OKX Card Reports 280% Surge in Everyday Spending Across Europe, which underscores the increasing consumer appetite for moving digital value into the real-world economy through integrated payment solutions.
What this means
This announcement signals that the "agentic" phase of the AI boom is moving from theory to production. By embedding payment rails directly into Grok, MoonPay is challenging the traditional checkout model. If the AI becomes the primary interface for commerce, the "buy button" on a website becomes secondary to the "prompt" in a chat window. This puts immense pressure on legacy payment gateways to develop their own agent-compatible protocols or risk being bypassed by specialized vaults like PayBox. The industry must now grapple with the legal and liability frameworks of autonomous spending, as the line between user intent and agent execution begins to blur.
