Block, Inc. has aggressively expanded its Neighborhoods initiative, integrating 30,000 additional sellers into the local commerce network. For fintech professionals, this move signals a significant deepening of the synergy between merchant services and consumer finance, leveraging Square’s point-of-sale ecosystem to drive direct customer engagement and retention via Cash App.

What was announced

Block has reported a nearly tenfold increase in seller participation for Neighborhoods since June, bringing the total number of businesses on the network to over 30,000. The initiative functions as a bridge between Square sellers and Cash App users, utilizing a map-based discovery interface within the Cash App. The system is designed to incentivize repeat visits through "Local Cash," a rewards mechanism where customers earn 10% of their order subtotal (up to $10) on qualifying purchases. During the initial rollout phase, Cash App is funding these rewards, providing merchants with a subsidized loyalty program.

The expansion follows the integration of Neighborhoods into additional Square hardware, including the Square Terminal, which doubled the pool of eligible sellers in June 2026. Data from the rollout indicates that by June 2026, the network had scaled to include sellers representing $1 billion in annualized gross payment volume (GPV), a 220% increase from March 2026. Furthermore, spend from followers reached an average of 10% of a seller's GPV after three quarters on the platform. Beyond rewards, the system allows sellers to launch targeted marketing campaigns directly to their followers within Cash App, including a $5 Local Cash bonus for first-time qualifying purchases.

"Neighborhoods helps local businesses get discovered by new customers and then turn that first visit into a lasting relationship. We're seeing a business's most loyal customers come back more often and spend more, which creates the repeat behavior that helps local businesses grow and thrive."

Owen Jennings, Executive Officer and Head of Business, Block.

The companies involved

Block, Inc., formerly known as Square, Inc., is a global technology company with a focus on financial services. Its ecosystem is comprised of several distinct business units, including Square, which provides software and hardware solutions for sellers, and Cash App, a consumer-facing financial platform. The company also oversees Afterpay, a "buy now, pay later" service, the music streaming platform Tidal, the Bitcoin-focused entity Proto, and Bitkey, a self-custody bitcoin wallet.

Square operates as a dominant player in the merchant acquiring and point-of-sale market, offering integrated tools for payments, marketing, and staff management. Cash App has evolved from a peer-to-peer payment tool into a comprehensive financial hub for consumers. The Neighborhoods project represents the most direct technical integration of these two pillars to date. Participating merchants highlighted in the expansion include Night Swim Coffee, a specialty coffee brand based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Keva Juice, a retail chain operating across Nevada and Colorado.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the evolution of Square’s merchant ecosystem. We recently covered how The Baked Bear Scales National Footprint with Square’s Integrated POS Technology, highlighting the platform's utility for growing franchises. Additionally, we reported on the company’s efforts to deepen financial utility for small businesses in Square Upgrades Credit Card with 3% Cash Back and New Bill Pay for Small Businesses. These developments underscore a broader trend of consolidating business operations and financial rewards into a single, seamless environment.

What this means

This announcement highlights a shift in the competitive landscape for merchant services. By leveraging Cash App’s massive consumer base to drive foot traffic to Square sellers, Block is moving beyond simple payment processing into the realm of a closed-loop marketing ecosystem. This puts significant pressure on traditional merchant acquirers and standalone loyalty platforms that lack a direct-to-consumer channel. The primary question for the sector is whether this "walled garden" approach to local commerce will force competitors to seek similar consumer-facing partnerships to remain relevant. As Block ramps up auto-enablement, the industry will be watching to see if this integration can maintain its GPV growth without permanent subsidy from the parent company.
