UOB and Raffles Hotel Singapore Launch AI Masterclass to Bridge SME Implementation Gap
2 September 2026

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the food and beverage and retail sectors are struggling to bridge the gap between artificial intelligence experimentation and full-scale implementation. For fintech professionals, this highlights a critical demand for integrated digital tools that move beyond basic automation to solve immediate margin compression and rising operational costs.
What was announced
UOB and Raffles Hotel Singapore recently hosted a SkillsFuture Queen Bee Masterclass, part of the UOB SME Elevate Programme, attracting over 120 business owners and industry leaders. The event focused on how SMEs can navigate a landscape defined by manpower constraints and evolving consumer expectations through technology and data.
A post-event poll of 100 attendees revealed a stark disparity in technology adoption. While 55 per cent of respondents indicated they are currently exploring or piloting AI solutions, a mere 6 per cent have successfully integrated AI across their entire business operations. This "implementation gap" persists even as 30 per cent of business owners cite rising operating costs as their primary challenge, and 29 per cent identify improving profitability as their top priority for the coming year.
To address these hurdles, UOB highlighted several practical support mechanisms. The UOB BizSmart suite offers digital solutions for core functions including accounting, payroll, and payments, featuring 0% transaction fees for PayNow collections via soundbox. Additionally, the bank is collaborating with Enterprise Singapore on the F&B AI and Digital Integration Programme to provide grant support. Educational resources are also being funneled through UOB FinLab, which provides upskilling in AI, sustainability, and digitalisation to help leaders translate technology investments into measurable business outcomes.
"Margins have compressed to a point where expansion is genuinely difficult for most operators. This is the new reality for F&B in mature markets and it will increasingly be determined by those who invests in capability rather than those who wait for conditions to improve. Moving beyond generative AI tools and into agentic workflows is where the margin comes back. This cascades through the entire business, from head office to operations, and opens up new revenue streams that were not possible a few years ago. There has never been a better time to build a business differently and without those foundations, expanding abroad only spreads the business thinner."

This includes the UOB and Allianz Global Investors Ink Strategic Wealth Management Partnership in Southeast Asia, which bolstered the bank's wealth management capabilities. Furthermore, the bank’s efforts to enhance consumer and business offerings were highlighted in the UOB and Visa Launch ASEAN-Wide Visa Infinite Tiers in Landmark Multi-Market Partnership. What this means
The data from this masterclass confirms that the "AI hype cycle" has reached a difficult plateau for SMEs. While the financial sector has been quick to market AI as a panacea for efficiency, the 6 per cent adoption rate suggests that current off-the-shelf solutions may be too complex or poorly aligned with the razor-thin margins of the F&B and retail industries. Banks and fintech providers are now under intense pressure to move beyond providing simple credit lines. The market is shifting toward a model where financial institutions must act as technology intermediaries, bundling software-as-a-service (SaaS) with traditional banking to ensure their clients remain solvent in a high-cost environment.
