Wise Launches All-in-One Travel Hub with Global eSIMs and Cross-Border QR Payments
By Lauren Towner · 6 October 2026

Wise has integrated customisable eSIM data plans and a cross-border QR code scanner into its mobile application, targeting the primary friction points of international travel. By combining connectivity with local payment methods across five continents, the fintech aims to eliminate the reliance on physical cash and insecure public Wi-Fi for travellers in over 150 destinations.
What was announced
Wise is addressing "arrival anxiety" by allowing users to manage data and payments within a single interface. The new eSIM service offers regional plans in more than 150 destinations, with a specific focus on customisable plans for users in the UK, EEA, US, Canada, Brazil, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, and New Zealand. Unlike traditional roaming, these plans allow users to set exact data allowances and durations mapped to their specific itineraries. The system requires only a one-time installation, and Wise has committed to refunding travellers for any purchased data plans that remain unused. To assist with planning, the app includes intuitive guidelines to help customers estimate their data needs before departure.
On the payment side, the app now supports direct connections to major local QR schemes, which are often the primary method of transaction in markets where Western cards are less common. This includes PayNow in Singapore, QR Ph in the Philippines, DuitNow in Malaysia, Pix in Brazil, PromptPay in Thailand, Swiss QR-bill in Switzerland, and Qvik in Hungary. A strategic partnership with Ant International’s Alipay+ further extends this reach, particularly in the Chinese mainland. This integration allows eligible Wise users to pay at millions of Alipay+ enabled merchants across 50+ destinations, including Hong Kong, Korea, and Sri Lanka, without needing a local bank account or a separate app setup. A YouGov survey commissioned by Wise highlighted the necessity of these features, finding that 43% of travellers report cash management as their primary payment hurdle abroad, while 62% rely on hotel Wi-Fi to stay connected.
"By offering reusable global eSIMs, instant local QR payments, cost of living support and fair mid-market exchange rates in one app, we’re making spending and staying connected abroad completely effortless."
Florian Ramos, Growth Director for Europe at Wise.
The companies involved

What this means
This move signals a shift in the fintech "super-app" race, moving away from generic financial services toward solving specific, high-friction life events like international travel. By bundling telco services (eSIMs) with payments, Wise is encroaching on territory traditionally held by standalone travel-tech apps and mobile carriers. This puts significant pressure on traditional banks that still rely on high roaming fees and card-based transactions, which are increasingly obsolete in QR-centric markets like Southeast Asia and China. The industry must now consider whether financial apps need to evolve into broader utility platforms to maintain user retention and relevance in a crowded global market.
