PayNearMe has acquired the technology assets and key personnel of Marr Labs, an AI specialist focused on agentic solutions for complex, regulated environments. For fintech professionals, this move signals a shift from simple chatbots to deeply integrated AI agents capable of managing end-to-end payment workflows and decision-making within the PayXM platform.

What was announced

PayNearMe has completed the acquisition of Marr Labs’ technology assets and integrated its core team to accelerate the deployment of agentic AI within the payments sector. Marr Labs, founded in 2023 and backed by Y Combinator, specializes in developing AI that automates voice, messaging, and workflows specifically for highly regulated industries. The team includes engineers who previously developed technology powering early Siri products, bringing significant experience in building AI systems that handle millions of customer interactions monthly.

The acquisition aims to embed these capabilities directly into PayNearMe’s PayXM platform. Unlike traditional "bolt-on" AI, the integration focuses on "agentic" solutions—AI that can understand context, make decisions, and execute actions based on specific business rules. This technology is designed to operate across the entire payment journey, from the initial request through to final reconciliation.

PayNearMe currently processes more than $50 billion in annual payments and serves over 20,000 businesses. By absorbing Marr Labs’ expertise, the company intends to apply AI to reduce the total cost of payment acceptance and improve the experience for support teams and end-users. The Marr Labs team will work alongside PayNearMe’s existing product and engineering divisions to scale these sophisticated AI systems within the established payments infrastructure.

"PayNearMe has always focused on understanding and continuously improving the entire payment journey. AI provides powerful opportunities to further improve the experience delivered by our PayXM platform. The Marr Labs team has proven its ability to build and deploy sophisticated AI systems at massive scale. Combining that expertise with PayNearMe’s deep understanding of our clients needs and challenges makes this combination so exciting."

The companies involved

PayNearMe is a fintech firm that focuses on Payment Experience Management (PEM). Since its founding in 2009, the company has developed the PayXM platform to help businesses manage the complexities of payment acceptance, including data reconciliation and customer engagement. The company has established a significant footprint in sectors requiring high reliability and compliance, such as financial services and regulated gaming.

Marr Labs entered the market in 2023 as an AI-first company. Based in the Y Combinator ecosystem, its leadership team includes co-founder and CEO Dave Grannan, co-founder and CTO Han Shu, and co-founder Ghinwa Choueiter. The firm’s primary focus has been the creation of AI agents that maintain natural conversational experiences while adhering to strict regulatory requirements. Before this acquisition, Marr Labs’ technology was already supporting millions of monthly interactions for financial services companies, emphasizing reliability in environments where compliance is a non-negotiable factor. The integration of its personnel into PayNearMe brings together specialized AI development with a large-scale, established payments infrastructure.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed PayNearMe’s expansion into highly regulated markets and its incremental adoption of automation. In October 2025, the company took a significant step in this direction when PayNearMe Enhances PayXM™ with Rollout of AI-Powered Intelligent Virtual Agent (IVA), marking an earlier effort to integrate conversational AI into its core platform.

The company’s growth has also been defined by its presence in the gaming sector. FF News reported in 2024 that Mohegan Digital Chooses PayNearMe as Exclusive Payment Platform for Pennsylvania Online Gaming, following a 2022 milestone where PayNearMe Expands Footprint with Approval to Process Online Sports Betting Payments in Kansas. These developments highlight the firm's strategy of securing high-volume, regulated payment flows before introducing advanced AI layers.

What this means

This acquisition indicates that the "chatbot era" in fintech is maturing, replaced by a demand for agentic AI that can execute financial tasks rather than just answering FAQs. By acquiring Marr Labs, PayNearMe is addressing a critical bottleneck: the gap between conversational interfaces and back-end payment workflows. Competitors who rely on third-party, generic LLM wrappers will likely find themselves under pressure as the market shifts toward vertically integrated AI that understands specific regulatory constraints. The move raises questions for the wider industry about whether payment processors must now become AI developers to remain competitive, or if specialized AI firms will continue to be the primary drivers of innovation through similar exits.
