Miconex has launched its 2026 search for the UK’s Favourite Local Business, leveraging its Town & City Gift Card infrastructure to drive community engagement. For fintech professionals, this represents a strategic use of closed-loop payment systems to capture consumer sentiment and stimulate local economic activity during the critical pre-Christmas trading period.

What was announced

Miconex is inviting nominations for the 2026 UK’s Favourite Local Business competition, a national initiative designed to highlight the economic and social contributions of independent and high street firms. The search covers a broad range of sectors, including retail, hospitality, leisure, health and beauty, and professional services. Nominations are being accepted through the lovelocalwin.co.uk portal until the competition closes on 30th November 2026.

The winning business will receive a £1,000 Town & City Gift Card, which can be used in one of over 90 participating UK towns and cities. Additionally, one individual who nominated the winning business will also be awarded a £1,000 gift card. This initiative follows previous iterations of the contest; in 2024, the top five businesses were located in Aberdeen, the Isle of Wight, Falkirk, Aberdeenshire, and Ilkley, while the 2022 winner was the historic Isle of Wight retailer W Hurst & Son.

Miconex’s data underscores a significant consumer appetite for localism. Recent research involving over 1,000 people found that 99% of respondents consider supporting local businesses important, with 73% stating this priority has increased over the last year. To date, Miconex has facilitated over £69 million in gift card sales, with more than 27,000 businesses currently integrated into its local gift card programs.

"There is a real shift towards supporting local businesses and an understanding of the difference this makes. In our research, 40% of respondents say they support local businesses to help their town or city to thrive, and 33% to keep the businesses they like open. We’re launching the UK’s Favourite Local Business 2026 so we can shine a light on the positive impact our local shops, restaurants, hotels, attractions, salons and services have on our economy, and on the vibrancy of our local communities."

The companies involved

Miconex is a fintech firm focused on community wealth building by providing tangible means for local areas to retain consumer spending. Based at miconexpartners.com, the company operates by diverting expenditure back into local businesses of all sizes, encouraging residents to explore and connect with their immediate surroundings. Its primary vehicle for this is the Town & City Gift Card program.

These gift cards occupy a unique position in the UK payments and loyalty market. Unlike traditional single-brand gift cards or generic multi-retailer vouchers, Town & City Gift Cards are designed to be spent across a diverse ecosystem of both major national brands and small independent businesses within a specific geographic area. This dual-utility model allows the cards to function as a localized currency that supports the entire high street ecosystem. By integrating over 27,000 businesses into its network, Miconex has established a significant footprint in the UK’s local loyalty sector, positioning itself as a key intermediary between local authorities, business improvement districts, and the general public.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked Miconex’s expansion and its collaborative efforts to stimulate local economies through fintech solutions. In August 2026, we reported on a significant international move in Payzone and Miconex Partner to Drive €1M Boost for Irish Local Businesses. That partnership aimed to provide a €1 million boost to the Irish local business sector, demonstrating the scalability of Miconex’s closed-loop gift card model beyond the UK market. This prior coverage highlights the company’s ongoing strategy of partnering with established payment providers to increase the accessibility and impact of its local spending initiatives, moving from individual town programs to larger-scale national deployments.

What this means

This announcement reflects a maturing trend where fintech infrastructure is being used to weaponize consumer sentiment against the dominance of global e-commerce. By gamifying the "buy local" movement, Miconex is attempting to convert passive support for the high street into active transaction volume. However, the industry remains under pressure to prove that these seasonal, prize-led initiatives can create permanent shifts in consumer behavior rather than temporary spikes. The success of such programs raises questions for the wider payments sector about the long-term viability of hyper-local closed-loop systems versus the convenience of universal digital wallets.
