Payzone and Miconex Partner to Drive €1M Boost for Irish Local Businesses
By Lauren Towner · 18 August 2026
Payzone and Miconex have launched a partnership to distribute Town & City Gift Cards across more than 3,000 retail locations in Ireland. For fintech professionals, this move represents a significant expansion of hyper-local closed-loop payment ecosystems, leveraging established point-of-sale infrastructure to drive digital wallet adoption and regional economic retention.
What was announced
The collaboration makes Town & City Gift Cards available for purchase at selected Payzone payment terminals located in convenience stores, newsagents, and supermarkets throughout Ireland. The initiative targets a wide geographic footprint, including prominent retail chains, allowing consumers to buy locally branded digital gift cards for towns such as Ballinrobe, Carndonagh, Drogheda, Donegal Town, Dungarvan & West Waterford, Kilkenny, Limerick, Letterkenny, Monaghan, Mullingar, Macroom, Sligo, Tipperary, Waterford, and Wexford.
The cards are available in values ranging from €10 to €250. Once a card is purchased at a Payzone terminal, the recipient adds the digital asset to their digital wallet via Miconex’s Love Local app. These cards are Mastercard-backed, ensuring they can be spent seamlessly at registered local businesses, including shops, restaurants, salons, attractions, and hotels. The partnership is strategically timed to capitalize on the €17.4 million of Town & City Gift Cards sold in Ireland during 2025, with projections estimating the Payzone deal will drive an additional €1 million in local spend over the next three years. Further expansion of the program is already scheduled for 2026.
"At Payzone, we're committed to supporting communities across the country and the independent businesses that are at the heart of them. Making Town & City Gift Cards available through our retail network gives consumers another easy, convenient way to ‘support local’. With more than 3,000 retail partners across Ireland, we're proud to help make these gift cards more accessible and, in doing so, contribute to keeping more spending within local economies."

The companies involved
Payzone is a major Irish payments network, operating a vast retail infrastructure that facilitates everyday financial transactions, from utility bill payments to transport ticketing. The company serves as a critical link between consumers and financial services through its presence in local newsagents and supermarkets. Miconex is the fintech provider behind the Town & City Gift Card program. The firm specializes in creating local currency and gift card solutions designed to lock spend into specific geographic areas, supporting high-street recovery and local business ecosystems.
The program is supported by Mastercard, a global leader in payment technology that provides the underlying network infrastructure for the cards. The initiative also involves local stakeholders such as Love Drogheda BID (Business Improvement District), which has utilized the Miconex platform since 2020 to circulate nearly €1 million within the Drogheda economy. These organizations collectively aim to bridge the gap between digital payment convenience and the "shop local" movement, providing a scalable model for community-focused fintech.

What this means
This partnership is a clear indicator that "localism" is no longer just a marketing sentiment but a measurable fintech vertical. By integrating with Payzone’s 3,000 terminals, Miconex is solving the primary friction point for gift cards: physical accessibility. While digital-first solutions are the trend, the ability to buy a local digital asset while purchasing petrol or groceries taps into existing consumer habits. Traditional gift card providers should be under pressure; the shift toward Mastercard-backed, multi-merchant local cards offers far more utility than single-brand vouchers. Watch for whether this model expands into other European markets where retail-based payment networks remain the dominant touchpoint for community financial services.
