Press Release: Waitrose Extends Trust Retail Partnership to 2031 for Nationwide Inventory Tech Rollout | Featured Image by FF News

Waitrose has extended its partnership with Trust Retail for five years to accelerate the rollout of real-time inventory management technology across its UK store estate. For fintech professionals, this move highlights the growing convergence of retail operations and real-time data accounting, as supermarkets move away from legacy batch processing toward immediate, cloud-based financial and stock visibility.

What was announced

Waitrose is expanding its use of Trust Retail’s SaaS inventory management platform, extending the existing agreement through to November 2031. The technology provides a real-time view of stock levels, moving the supermarket away from traditional batch updates. This system ensures that transactions are reflected immediately across both connected inventory and accounting systems, providing store partners with an accurate view of stock throughout the trading day. Using handheld devices, store partners can access current inventory information to support day-to-day activities including replenishment, stock management, and markdown decisions.

The rollout follows a trial that began in a single Waitrose store in March 2026. Currently, the technology is live in eight locations. A broader implementation is scheduled to commence at the end of September, with approximately 125 stores expected to be operational before Christmas. The remaining Waitrose store estate is slated to complete the transition by March 2027.

The implementation involves integrating Trust Retail’s platform with Waitrose’s existing systems and incorporating specific operational requirements into the SaaS platform. By providing greater visibility, the technology is designed to help partners make faster, data-led decisions while reducing the time and manual intervention previously required to manage stock across the store network. The partnership draws on Trust Retail’s specific grocery and stock management expertise to support these complex retail environments.

"Implementing inventory management technology across a retail environment of this scale is a complex undertaking, but our teams have worked closely together to understand Waitrose’s operational requirements, integrate the technology across its existing systems and create a solution that gives colleagues a more accurate, real-time view of stock. With the initial stores now live and the wider rollout beginning, we’re excited to take the next step in the partnership and support Waitrose as it brings these capabilities to colleagues across its store estate. The lessons learned from this partnership will help us to deploy inventory management in any grocery and convenience retail premises moving forwards."

The companies involved

Trust Retail is a business unit of Trust Payments, a global unified payments group. Trust Payments provides a range of financial services, including merchant acquiring, payment gateways, and POS solutions, often focusing on high-growth sectors and complex retail environments. The company has established a significant presence in the fintech space by combining traditional payment processing with specialized retail technology, such as the SaaS inventory platform being deployed in this partnership.

Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, is a major UK supermarket chain. The retailer operates hundreds of stores across the United Kingdom and has been investing in digital transformation to modernise its supply chain and in-store operations. This partnership represents a commitment to upgrading its technological infrastructure, moving from older, batch-based systems to a more agile, real-time operational model. By collaborating with Trust Retail, Waitrose aims to leverage specialized grocery and stock management expertise to improve its end-to-end stock programme and the service provided to customers.

What this means

This extension signals a shift in how major retailers view the relationship between physical inventory and digital accounting. The move from batch updates to real-time synchronization is no longer a luxury but a necessity for supermarkets facing thin margins and high consumer expectations. By integrating stock management directly into the accounting flow, Waitrose is addressing the "data lag" that often leads to inefficiencies in replenishment and waste. For the wider industry, this puts pressure on legacy ERP and inventory providers to offer deeper, real-time integration. The question now is how quickly competitors can move away from fragmented systems to achieve similar visibility across their estates.
