Press Release: TerraPay and Alipay+ Partner to Enable Cross-Border QR Payments for 150 Million Merchants | Featured Image by FF News

TerraPay and Ant International’s Alipay+ have formed a strategic partnership to bridge the gap between regional digital wallets and global merchant networks. By integrating TerraPay’s Xend network with Alipay+, the collaboration enables seamless cross-border QR payments across Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America, addressing a critical friction point for international travelers and fintech providers.

What was announced

The partnership focuses on enhancing global payments interoperability by connecting TerraPay’s wallet interoperability network, Xend, with the Alipay+ ecosystem. In the initial phase of the rollout, 15 digital wallets across Africa that are currently connected to Xend will gain the ability to transact at more than 150 million merchants worldwide. This ecosystem spans 220 destination markets and includes integrations with over 10 national payment systems.

For users, the service operates through a simple QR code scan. Instead of relying on physical cash or traditional foreign exchange counters when traveling, customers can use their existing home-country digital wallets to pay in-store. This transition moves TerraPay’s capabilities beyond its traditional account-to-account (A2A) cross-border payment strengths into the realm of global retail acceptance. Many travelers currently face friction when transacting across borders; while their digital wallets work seamlessly locally, they often revert to unfamiliar and costly payment methods once they leave their home market.

The initiative specifically targets regions where digital wallet adoption is high but international utility has historically been limited, such as Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. By utilizing a single integration through Xend, wallet providers can offer their customers the ability to spend internationally without the need to switch applications or carry physical cards. This helps domestic wallet providers maintain user loyalty while expanding their utility into the global commerce landscape. Alipay+ currently connects over 50 international payment partners to its merchant network, facilitating a more inclusive global commerce ecosystem.

The companies involved

TerraPay is a global money movement company that has established itself as a significant player in the cross-border payment space. The firm focuses on building a payment infrastructure that connects diverse financial systems, moving beyond simple transfers to enable broader interoperability through its Xend network. TerraPay has been a frequent subject of industry analysis, with a track record of expanding its footprint across emerging markets to facilitate seamless movement of funds.

Ant International, the parent organization behind Alipay+, is a leading provider of digital payment, digitisation, and financial technology services. The company operates a unified "techfin" platform designed to support financial institutions and merchants of all sizes to achieve inclusive growth. Its Alipay+ solution serves as a unified wallet gateway, connecting over 50 international payment partners to a vast global merchant network. Ant International has been aggressively expanding its regulatory and operational reach, recently securing a Payment Institution license in Brazil to bolster its services within the Latin American market. Together, these companies represent a significant portion of the infrastructure driving the shift from traditional banking rails to digital-first, mobile-centric payment solutions on a global scale.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the expansion of both entities as they build out global payment corridors. Recently, Ant International has made significant strides in South America, where Ant International Secures Payment Institution License in Brazil to Expand Regional Services. This move aligns with their broader strategy of localized growth, similar to when Vietnam Airlines Partners with 2C2P by Antom to Expand Localized Payments Across Asia Pacific.

The drive toward QR-based interoperability is a recurring theme in the sector. Earlier this year, iFAST Global Bank & Alipay+ Launch Global QR Payments, demonstrating the increasing demand for "scan and pay" functionality across borders. While these retail developments progress, the underlying infrastructure continues to evolve, as seen when DBS and Citi Complete First Weekend USD Cross-Border Payment via Swift Digital Ledger.

What this means

This partnership signals a shift in the competitive landscape for cross-border retail payments. By bypassing traditional card networks and focusing on QR-based wallet interoperability, TerraPay and Alipay+ are directly challenging the dominance of legacy payment providers in emerging markets. The move puts pressure on regional banks and traditional remittance firms to offer similar "lifestyle" payment features or risk losing user engagement to super-apps and unified gateways. However, the success of such a massive network hinges on merchant education and the consistency of the user experience across 220 different markets. The industry must now consider whether QR codes will become the definitive global standard for travel-based commerce, potentially sidelining NFC-based solutions in the developing world.
