Ant International and Bank of China (Hong Kong) (BOCHK) have established a strategic partnership to integrate AI-driven fintech with traditional banking infrastructure. For fintech professionals, this move signals a significant acceleration in the deployment of tokenisation and blockchain for real-time liquidity management and cross-border retail payments across Southeast Asia.

What was announced

The partnership focuses on three core pillars: retail payment connectivity, corporate liquidity, and SME global expansion. Under the agreement, BOCHK will provide essential settlement banking services and supporting accounts for Alipay+, Ant International’s unified wallet gateway. This infrastructure supports a payment ecosystem that currently connects over 50 mobile payment partners and more than 2 billion user accounts worldwide. The collaboration also deepens ties between BOCHK and AlipayHK, allowing customers to link bank accounts and credit cards for peer-to-peer transfers and top-ups.

In the corporate sector, Ant International’s embedded finance business, Bettr, is working with BOCHK to develop blockchain-based solutions. These initiatives utilise distributed ledger technology and tokenisation to create real-time cash flow management tools, aiming to increase settlement efficiency for global payment needs. Furthermore, the two entities will combine BOCHK’s foreign exchange pricing with Ant International’s AI to build intelligent treasury solutions.

For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), WorldFirst will collaborate with BOCHK to offer integrated fund management. This service is designed to support Chinese enterprises expanding globally, leveraging WorldFirst’s existing network that covers more than 220 countries and regions with multi-currency collection and AI-powered compliance support.

"BOCHK is committed to promoting cross-border financial connectivity, with deep expertise in areas such as cross-border payments, treasury management, and fintech. We are pleased to join forces with Ant International, an industry-leading fintech company, not only to explore innovative cross-border financial service solutions, but also to advance fintech innovation and application in Hong Kong, fostering mutually beneficial cooperation in cross-border finance across Southeast Asia. Capitalising on our extensive experience in cross-border personal payment settlements and corporate global liquidity management, as well as our unique strength as Bank of China’s Southeast Asia regional headquarters, BOCHK is dedicated to providing Ant International and its clients with secure and efficient cross-border financial services."

The companies involved

Ant International is a major global fintech player, operating a suite of brands including the cross-border payment solution Alipay+, the global account service provider WorldFirst, and the embedded finance brand Bettr. The company has a long-standing history of digital innovation in the Asian market and has collaborated with BOCHK since 2013.

Bank of China (Hong Kong), or BOCHK, serves as a primary commercial banking group in Hong Kong and acts as the Southeast Asia regional headquarters for its parent, the Bank of China. It holds a dominant position in cross-border personal payment settlements and corporate liquidity management. WorldFirst, which is part of the Ant International ecosystem, provides one-stop financial solutions for international trade, while Bettr focuses on inclusive finance and blockchain-driven settlement. Together, these entities represent a formidable bridge between the traditional banking sector and the emerging Web3 and AI-driven financial landscape, particularly within the Hong Kong and Southeast Asian corridors.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the expansion of Ant International’s ecosystem. We previously covered how Ant International’s Bettr and Muslim Pro Launch Shariah-Compliant Umrah Financing in Malaysia, demonstrating the brand's push into specialised regional financial products. Our reporting has also tracked the growth of their payment infrastructure, notably when Alipay+ Expands Global Bank Network to Fuel Asia Pacific Cross-Border Payment Surge. Additionally, we noted the company's geographical diversification in reports such as Freedom Holding Corp and Antom Partner to Streamline Cross-Border Payments for Kazakhstan.

What this means

This partnership is a clear indicator that the "experimental" phase of blockchain in banking is ending. By moving tokenisation and distributed ledger technology into the live treasury operations of a major institution like BOCHK, Ant International is setting a new standard for liquidity management. The focus on Southeast Asia is a direct challenge to traditional correspondent banking, which remains slow and expensive. Competitors in the cross-border space will now be under immense pressure to match the real-time settlement speeds and AI-driven FX pricing that this duo is bringing to market. Watch for a surge in similar "bank-fintech" alliances as traditional players scramble to avoid being sidelined by integrated digital ecosystems.
