Press Release: Zip Expands Beyond Checkout with Zip Cash: Same-Day Loans for Everyday Expenses | Featured Image by FF News

Zip Co Limited is expanding its digital financial services beyond the point of sale with the introduction of Zip Cash, a same-day cash loan product designed for the U.S. market. For fintech professionals, this move signals a significant pivot for BNPL providers as they seek to capture broader consumer liquidity needs and bridge the gap between paychecks and essential expenses.

What was announced

Zip Cash is a same-day cash loan product designed to provide liquidity beyond the traditional point-of-purchase checkout. The product allows eligible users to access loans of up to $500, with funds deposited into a connected bank account as soon as the same business day. The service is specifically aimed at addressing the "timing gap" between everyday expenses—such as fuel, groceries, or unexpectedly high bills—and the arrival of a customer's next paycheck.

The rollout is scheduled to begin with select customers in eligible U.S. states during the 2026 holiday season, with plans for broader availability to follow. Built on the company’s existing "Pay-in-4" infrastructure, the product features a flat origination fee that is disclosed to the customer before they accept the loan. Notably, the product does not require a hard credit inquiry and avoids compounding fees. In a move toward flexibility, customers are also given the option to request changes to their repayment dates.

Consumer interest appears high, with more than 100,000 customers already joined the waitlist, including 40,000 sign-ups within the first 72 hours of the announcement. All loans through the platform are originated by WebBank and remain subject to credit approval. To maintain responsible lending standards, any customer with an outstanding missed payment will be barred from accessing further loans on the Zip platform until the balance is resolved.

"Zip® Cash builds on Zip’s existing Pay-in-4 platform, demonstrating the compounding value of a durable, extensible platform. Similar to our other products, Zip® Cash is designed to be customer-first: one transparent loan and no hidden or junk fees. We believe we can serve customers’ short-term cashflow needs responsibly while giving them more control over their financial timeline."

The companies involved

Zip Co Limited (ACN 139 546 428) is an Australian digital financial services company that has established a significant footprint in the global fintech landscape. Founded in Australia in 2013, the company has grown from a domestic buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) provider into a multi-national entity operating primarily in Australia and the United States. It trades on the Australian Securities Exchange under the ticker ZIP.

The company’s core business model revolves around offering point-of-sale credit and digital payment services. By connecting millions of customers with a global network of tens of thousands of merchants, Zip has positioned itself as a transparent alternative to traditional credit cards. Its primary offering in the U.S. market has been the "Pay-in-4" installment product, which allows consumers to split purchases into four interest-free payments. Zip emphasizes a "people-centred" approach to finance, focusing on fair and flexible payment options that provide consumers with greater control over their financial timelines while simultaneously driving growth for its merchant partners.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked Zip’s aggressive expansion into the U.S. consumer market through high-profile cultural and retail partnerships. In October 2026, the company made a significant move into the sports world when Zip Partners with Philadelphia 76ers to Bring Flexible Payments to NBA Fans, a deal aimed at integrating BNPL options directly into the fan experience. This followed a broader retail push earlier that year, as reported in Zip US and Rally House Partner to Launch BNPL for Sports Fans Nationwide. That partnership focused on providing installment payment options for sports apparel and merchandise, demonstrating Zip's strategy of embedding its financial products into specific consumer passion points.

What this means

The launch of Zip Cash represents a strategic pivot for the BNPL industry, moving from a transaction-enabler to a direct provider of personal liquidity. This shift places Zip in direct competition with traditional short-term lenders and the burgeoning earned wage access sector. By leveraging its existing user base and "Pay-in-4" reputation, Zip is attempting to solve the "timing gap" problem without the predatory stigma often associated with payday loans. However, the move carries inherent risks; decoupling credit from a specific merchant transaction removes a layer of purchase validation. The industry will be watching closely to see if this model can maintain low default rates while operating as a general-purpose cash buffer.
