Pathward and Clair Extend Partnership to Scale Embedded Earned Wage Access Solutions
By Lauren Towner · 14 October 2026

Pathward Financial and fintech Clair have extended their partnership to continue providing earned wage access (EWA) solutions to the American workforce. By renewing this agreement, Pathward maintains its role as the originating bank for advances, ensuring that eligible workers can access their earnings before payday through Clair’s embedded platform, a critical move for liquidity in the gig and hourly economy.
What was announced
The extension of this partnership solidifies the infrastructure behind Clair’s earned wage access platform. Under the terms of the renewed agreement, Pathward, N.A. will continue to serve as the originating lender for the wage advances. This allows Clair to embed its financial services directly into existing payroll and workforce management systems, enabling employees to draw on their already-earned income without waiting for the traditional bi-weekly or monthly pay cycle. This "on-demand" pay model is designed to provide a liquidity bridge for workers between standard pay periods.
The scale of the operation is significant, reflecting the rapid growth of the EWA sector. Clair reported that its platform has reached a $2 billion wage advance volume run rate. The fintech currently serves approximately 500,000 monthly active users across more than 300,000 active businesses. These businesses span 41 different industries, highlighting the broad demand for liquidity among front-line and hourly workers in diverse economic sectors.
For employers, the integration is designed to be frictionless and cost-effective. The solution acts as a financial wellness benefit that requires no changes to existing payroll processes and carries no employer fees. Pathward’s role is essential to this model, providing the regulated banking and lending infrastructure that allows a non-bank fintech like Clair to offer credit-based products legally and at scale across the United States. This partnership ensures that the advances are handled through a national bank, providing a layer of regulatory oversight to the transaction.
"Clair has built an embedded solution that gives workers greater choice in when they access their earnings. Extending our partnership reflects our shared commitment to responsible innovation and expands the reach of a solution designed to improve financial access. We look forward to continuing to provide the banking and lending infrastructure that supports Clair’s growth."

The companies involved
Pathward Financial, Inc. (Nasdaq: CASH) operates primarily through its subsidiary, Pathward, N.A., a national bank that has positioned itself as a cornerstone of the U.S. fintech ecosystem. Formerly known as MetaBank, the institution underwent a significant rebranding to Pathward to better reflect its focus on financial inclusion and "banking-as-a-service" capabilities. It specializes in payment sponsorship and lending solutions, providing the regulatory backbone for numerous high-profile fintech programs across the country.
Clair is a New York-based embedded financial technology company that focuses on the Earned Wage Access (EWA) sector. Since its inception, the company has raised $69.2 million in funding from prominent venture capital firms, including Thrive Capital, Upfront Ventures, Kairos HQ, and Founder Collective. With a team of 78 full-time employees, Clair distinguishes itself by partnering directly with workforce management platforms to reach employees where they already track their hours. This strategy has allowed them to penetrate 41 different industries, offering a competitive edge in a market currently grappling with front-line worker shortages and a heightened demand for flexible compensation models for the modern workforce.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has closely followed Clair’s trajectory as it scaled its operations and matured within the EWA space. In 2021, the company made a major move when Clair Joins Forces with MetaBank and Galileo to Give America’s Workers Instant Access to Their Earnings, marking the beginning of the relationship with Pathward under its former name. The company’s integration strategy was further evidenced when Worklio Selects Clair as Partner for On-Demand Pay Benefits, expanding its reach into payroll software. More recently, the fintech reached a significant financial turning point, as seen in the report Clair Hits $100M Revenue Run Rate and Achieves Cashflow Positivity in EWA Milestone, signaling that its model of fee-free access for employers is sustainable at a high volume.
What this means
The renewal of this partnership highlights the increasing professionalization and regulatory stabilization of the Earned Wage Access sector. As EWA moves from a "nice-to-have" perk to a standard expectation for hourly workers, the reliance on established national banks like Pathward becomes a competitive necessity for fintechs. This relationship places pressure on traditional payroll providers who have been slow to innovate their own liquidity tools. However, the sector still faces scrutiny over how these advances are categorized—whether as a service or a loan. By utilizing Pathward’s lending infrastructure, Clair is effectively insulating itself against some of the regulatory uncertainty that plagues "tips-based" or non-bank EWA models, setting a standard for how these products should be structured.
