VaultsPay has integrated UnionPay International into its UAE payment ecosystem, enabling card acceptance across its physical point-of-sale terminals and digital gateways. For fintech professionals, this move highlights the intensifying competition to capture high-value cross-border spend from Chinese and international travellers in the Middle East’s rapidly evolving digital commerce landscape.

What was announced

The Vaults International Payment LLC (VaultsPay) has established a strategic collaboration with UnionPay International (UPI) to expand its acceptance network within the United Arab Emirates. Under the terms of the agreement, UnionPay cards are now accepted across the entirety of VaultsPay’s point-of-sale (POS) infrastructure and its online payment solutions. This integration bridges physical and digital channels, allowing VaultsPay to tap into one of the world's most extensive cardholder bases.

The partnership is specifically designed to facilitate transactions for Chinese and international travellers, as well as UAE residents and businesses engaged in cross-border commerce. By joining the UnionPay International Payment Network within its authorized service areas, VaultsPay gains the framework necessary to provide a suite of UnionPay-related payment services. The move is part of a broader strategy by VaultsPay to consolidate multiple payment methods into a single, connected ecosystem, leveraging regulatory strength and technological infrastructure.

The collaboration focuses on the UAE’s position as a global hub for commerce and tourism. By enabling UPI acceptance, VaultsPay aims to reduce friction for international visitors who rely on UnionPay’s global network. The agreement establishes a formal foundation for ongoing cooperation between the two entities, focusing on enhancing the connectivity between the UAE’s digital payments sector and the global financial grid. This expansion of acceptance capabilities strengthens the value of the VaultsPay platform across both physical and digital payments.

"Our partnership with UnionPay International marks an important milestone in VaultsPay's journey and reflects our ambition to build a payments ecosystem that is connected to the world. As the UAE continues to strengthen its position as a global hub for commerce, technology and innovation, we are focused on building the partnerships and infrastructure that can support that growth. Bringing UnionPay acceptance into the VaultsPay ecosystem is another significant step forward in that vision."

His Excellency Ali Almheiri, Chairman of VaultsPay.

The companies involved

VaultsPay, officially known as The Vaults International Payment LLC, is a UAE-based fintech firm focused on building a comprehensive payments ecosystem. The company operates across both physical and digital channels, providing point-of-sale terminals and online payment gateways designed to streamline how businesses and consumers interact. Its strategy centers on integrating diverse international payment methods into a unified infrastructure to support the UAE’s growing role in global trade and innovation.

UnionPay International is a subsidiary of China UnionPay, focusing on the growth and support of UnionPay’s global business. As one of the world's leading payment schemes, it connects a vast community of cardholders across China and numerous international markets. UPI provides high-quality, cost-effective, and secure cross-border payment services to the world’s largest cardholder base and ensures local services to a growing number of global UnionPay cardholders and merchants. In the Middle East, UPI operates through its regional branch to strengthen the digital payment ecosystem and support tourism and business sectors by expanding card acceptance and driving payment innovation.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed UnionPay International’s aggressive expansion into emerging markets and its efforts to bolster cross-border payment corridors. Recently, the publication covered how UnionPay and Standard Bank Expand E-Commerce Access Across Nine African Markets, a move that significantly increased digital merchant reach on the continent. Additionally, FF News reported on a similar regional push where UnionPay and Pesapal Partner to Scale Cross-Border Payments and Tourism in East Africa. These developments underscore a consistent pattern of UPI partnering with local fintech leaders to secure its position as a primary payment method for international travellers and businesses in high-growth regions.

What this means

This announcement signals that the UAE is no longer just a regional market but a critical battleground for global payment schemes seeking to capture "corridor" spend. By integrating UnionPay, VaultsPay is directly challenging established acquirers who may have been slower to cater to the specific needs of the Chinese diaspora and business community. The move puts pressure on local competitors to diversify their acceptance portfolios beyond Visa and Mastercard. It also raises questions about the pace of digital transformation in the UAE; as more local players integrate global giants, the barrier to entry for new, isolated payment solutions continues to rise, favouring interoperable ecosystems over closed-loop systems.
