Mastercard and Danske Bank Launch Denmark’s First AI Agent Payment via Agent Pay
By Lauren Towner · 21 September 2026

Mastercard and Danske Bank have successfully executed a live transaction where an AI agent independently handled both the booking and payment for a consumer. This milestone in Denmark signals a shift toward "agentic commerce," where financial institutions must now secure transactions initiated by autonomous software rather than human manual input.
What was announced
In a live demonstration conducted in Copenhagen on 21 September 2026, an AI agent acting on behalf of a consumer completed a purchase for a coffee tasting experience via Mastercard’s experiences platform, Priceless.com. The transaction utilized a Mastercard issued by Danske Bank and was facilitated through the Mastercard Agent Pay solution. The technical execution of the transaction, from the initial booking to the final settlement, was managed by PayOS.
The system is designed to allow AI agents to navigate the complex steps of a digital purchase while keeping the human user in control of the final authorization. To ensure the transaction was secure and verifiable, the process required explicit consumer consent and was authenticated using Mastercard Payment Passkeys. This framework provides card issuers with enhanced visibility, allowing them to distinguish between traditional human-initiated payments and those triggered by AI agents. By providing this transparency, the solution aims to mitigate the risks associated with automated commerce.
The pilot demonstrates the practical application of AI in everyday commerce, moving beyond simple chatbots to agents capable of executing financial commitments. Mastercard has indicated it will continue to work with partners across Europe to expand the use of secure and authenticated AI agent-based transactions across various industries, focusing on maintaining a verifiable trail for every automated purchase while ensuring the consumer remains the ultimate decision-maker in the payment flow.
"AI can help make everyday life easier, but trust and security must come first. Agent Pay is designed to ensure that AI-powered transactions are transparent, securely authenticated and always remain under the consumer’s control. At the same time, the solution gives card issuers greater visibility into transactions initiated by AI agents. Together with partners such as Danske Bank, we are helping to lay the foundation for secure and trusted AI-powered commerce,"

What FF News has reported before
This announcement follows a period of intense activity for Mastercard in the AI and automated payments space. Only days prior, FF News reported that Alchemy and Mastercard Launch AgentCard to Power Secure AI Agentic Commerce, which similarly focused on enabling AI agents to make secure online purchases. Additionally, the company has been refining its consumer-facing digital tools, as seen when Citi and Mastercard Debut Global-First Smart Subscription Management in UAE. These developments coincide with broader market shifts in the UK and Europe, including 3S Money Launches Virtual Debit Cards to Streamline UK Business Spending and FMPay Combines API-Led Payments with Human Risk Experts for Mid-Market Fintechs, highlighting a trend toward more granular, API-driven control over card spending.
What this means
The transition from AI as a search tool to AI as a transacting agent places immense pressure on traditional fraud detection systems. If AI agents begin making high-frequency, low-value purchases on behalf of millions of users, the current 3D Secure and manual authentication hurdles will become obsolete. The industry is now in a race to define what "consent" looks like when the person paying isn't the one clicking the button. This move by Mastercard and Danske Bank suggests that passkeys and agent-specific transaction flags will be the primary weapons against the potential for autonomous overspending or unauthorized bot-driven drain on consumer accounts.
