Hyundai Card and E-Mart Turn Transaction Data into Best-Selling Ready Meals
By Lauren Towner · 21 September 2026

Hyundai Card and E-Mart have leveraged credit card transaction data to identify local restaurants and develop ready-meal products. This initiative demonstrates how financial institutions can move beyond traditional marketing by using data science to drive tangible retail outcomes, offering a blueprint for how payment data can create new revenue streams through cross-industry collaboration.
What was announced
Hyundai Card and E-Mart have collaborated to transform credit card transaction data into consumer retail products. By bypassing traditional market research methods like online reviews or social media sentiment, the two companies identified lesser-known local restaurants with high customer loyalty to develop a line of ready-meals. The initiative utilized Hyundai Card’s Data Lab to analyze spending patterns from 2023 to 2024, focusing on specific demographics including local merchants, younger consumers, and premium cardholders.
The project resulted in five distinct products launched under E-Mart’s PEACOCK brand, which have collectively sold over 140,000 units as of August. Key discoveries included Hongbok, a Chinese restaurant in Seoul’s Namdaemun Market, which led to the creation of uni-jjajang noodles and yurin-gi chicken. In Seongsu-dong, data from Millennials and Gen Z consumers highlighted the Japanese ramen restaurant Ramura, while spending patterns of premium members in Cheongdam-dong identified the yakitori restaurant Yakitori Pano.
This data-driven product development was facilitated by Hyundai Card’s "Domain Cosmos" platform. This infrastructure allows for deep collaboration between business partners without the direct exchange of raw customer data, ensuring privacy while enabling sophisticated analytics. Since 2015, Hyundai Card has invested more than KRW 1 trillion in IT and artificial intelligence, with approximately KRW 500 billion specifically dedicated to the structuring of data to support these types of commercial applications.
"This achievement is the result of synergy between Hyundai Card’s data science and E-Mart’s product development capabilities," a Hyundai Card official said. "Going forward, Hyundai Card will continue to carry on with a collaboration model that goes beyond simple analysis and leads directly to actual product development and sales results through Domain Cosmos-based data science."

The companies involved
Hyundai Card is a prominent financial institution in South Korea, recognized for its aggressive pivot toward data science and digital integration. Since declaring its "Digital Hyundai Card" strategy in 2015, the firm has positioned itself as more than a traditional credit provider, investing heavily in AI and IT infrastructure. A core component of its market strategy is the development of Private Label Credit Cards (PLCC), where it partners with major brands to create bespoke financial products. The company’s "Domain Cosmos" system serves as the technical backbone for these partnerships, allowing for cross-industry data collaboration. E-Mart is South Korea’s largest hypermarket operator and a dominant force in the country’s retail sector. The company operates a "Secret Research Lab" dedicated to product innovation and manages the PEACOCK brand, which focuses on high-quality ready-meals and private-label food products. By partnering with Hyundai Card, E-Mart gains access to granular consumer behavior insights that traditional retail inventory data cannot provide, allowing the retailer to identify emerging culinary trends at the neighborhood level before they reach mainstream popularity.

What this means
This collaboration signals a shift in the utility of financial data from passive observation to active manufacturing. For the fintech sector, the move beyond personalized advertising into physical product development represents a significant maturation of data monetization strategies. By proving that transaction records can predict retail success more accurately than social media trends, Hyundai Card puts pressure on traditional market research firms. The success of the PEACOCK line suggests that "loyalty" as defined by repeat transactions is a more reliable metric for product-market fit than "likes" or "shares." This raises questions for the industry about whether the next generation of successful retail products will be designed by chefs or by data scientists.
