Press Release: Visa and Mesh Partner to Enable Crypto Payments at 175 Million Merchants Globally | Featured Image by FF News

Mesh and Visa have partnered to enable direct spending of crypto and stablecoin balances across Visa’s global merchant network. By integrating Mesh’s orchestration layer with Visa’s infrastructure, the collaboration removes the need for users to manually off-ramp funds or manage separate cards, potentially unlocking billions in digital asset value for everyday retail transactions.

What was announced

The partnership bridges Visa’s network of 175 million merchant locations across 200 countries and territories with Mesh’s connectivity infrastructure. The solution allows consumers to pay in-store and online using existing balances in their wallet apps. When a transaction occurs, a Visa credential is provisioned behind the scenes, allowing for a standard contactless tap or online checkout without the user needing to sell, transfer, or preload funds beforehand.

Merchants receive payments in standard fiat, requiring no hardware upgrades or changes to existing checkout workflows. Mesh handles the orchestration of how each transaction is funded and converted across supported balances, including crypto, stablecoins, and fiat. The initiative targets a massive market; global crypto ownership reached 774 million by June 2026, yet crypto card volumes remained at a relatively low $1.5 billion monthly in late 2025.

Mesh acts as the program manager, overseeing user onboarding and KYC requirements. This allows digital wallets and platforms—including existing Mesh partners like Kalshi, Tools for Humanity, Félix Pago, Majority, and KAST—to offer spending capabilities without building or running their own card programs. Mesh currently supports more than 200 enterprises and connects hundreds of exchanges and wallets to its network, which can now benefit from enabling Visa spending for their users.

"Crypto never had a spending problem — it has a last-mile problem, and until now, closing it meant getting a separate card,"

The companies involved

Visa is a global leader in digital payments, facilitating transactions between consumers, merchants, and financial institutions across more than 200 countries and territories. In fiscal 2025, the company processed $14.2 trillion in total payments volume. Visa has increasingly focused on integrating blockchain technology into its core network, moving beyond traditional fiat processing to include stablecoin-powered money movement and digital asset settlement through its various growth products and strategic partnerships.

Mesh is a crypto-native payments and orchestration network that provides enterprise-grade infrastructure for digital asset transfers and account connectivity. The company focuses on "embedded finance" for the crypto age, allowing platforms to integrate wallet connections and transaction flows via API. Mesh has established itself as a critical middleware layer in the ecosystem, connecting hundreds of wallets and exchanges to enable seamless movement of assets. By serving as an orchestration layer, Mesh allows financial platforms to offer complex services like crypto-backed spending without the regulatory and technical burden of managing individual payment rails or issuing physical hardware.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed the evolution of both companies as they bridge the gap between decentralized finance and traditional retail. We recently covered how Mesh Launches Link Chat: Turning Conversational AI Into Direct Financial Action, highlighting the firm's push into AI-driven financial connectivity. Visa’s activity in the stablecoin space has also been a recurring theme; we reported on the Visa Scales Stablecoin Strategy with Commercial Launch of Visa Direct Prefunding and a similar move where StraitsX Partners with Visa to Launch Stablecoin-Backed Cards in Over 100 Markets. Additionally, the broader payments landscape continues to shift, as seen in our coverage of Zilch Commits £77m to New London HQ as Customer Spend Surpasses £8 Billion.

What this means

This partnership signals a shift from "crypto-as-an-investment" to "crypto-as-currency" by solving the friction of the off-ramp. By provisioning credentials on-the-fly, Visa and Mesh are effectively commoditizing the crypto card. This puts significant pressure on niche crypto-card issuers whose primary value proposition was the physical plastic itself. The move also challenges traditional banks; if a consumer can spend directly from a non-custodial wallet at any Visa merchant, the necessity of a traditional checking account for daily liquidity diminishes. The open question remains whether consumers will actually spend volatile assets in a retail environment, or if this infrastructure will primarily serve the burgeoning stablecoin market.
