Mastercard is launching Mastercard Agent Connect and an expanded Agent Suite for Merchants to facilitate the transition to agentic commerce. By providing a single integration point for AI agents to discover products and execute consumer-authorized payments, the network aims to standardise how autonomous digital assistants interact with retailers while maintaining brand control and transaction security.

What was announced

Mastercard is introducing a suite of tools designed to bridge the gap between traditional e-commerce and AI-driven purchasing. The core of this offering is Mastercard Agent Connect, which serves as a unified integration point for merchants, digital platforms, and payment providers. This system allows AI agents to navigate the entire shopping journey: accessing merchant-provided product catalogs, recommending items for a shopper’s cart, and completing transactions using secure credentials from any network.

To ensure security in these non-human interactions, Mastercard Agent Pay utilizes a framework called Verifiable Intent, which requires explicit consumer authorization before a purchase is finalized. The Agent Suite for Merchants further supports this by incorporating a commerce agent blueprint developed in collaboration with Anthropic. This allows businesses to build their own shopping agents using Claude AI models, integrated with Mastercard’s existing commerce intelligence and payment capabilities.

The initiative is launching initially in the United States, supported by a broad network of technology partners and platforms. These include:

  • Global Payments
  • Samsung
  • Nexi
  • Network International
  • Vodafone Egypt
  • Bemobi
  • Getnet
  • Glance
  • Planet
  • Trip.com
  • Wizard
  • Wompi

"The internet connected people to businesses. Mobile put those businesses in everyone's pocket. AI agents will change the buying interface again, shifting commerce from search and discovery to checkout and disputes. We’re helping businesses prepare for that future while keeping them in control of their destiny through the same principles that have always made commerce work at scale: trust, interoperability, security and reach."

Jorn Lambert, chief product officer at Mastercard.

The companies involved

Mastercard is a global leader in the payments industry, operating one of the world's fastest payment processing networks. The company has been a frequent subject of coverage at FF News, with over 900 reports detailing its evolution from a traditional card network into a multi-rail technology provider. In this latest move, Mastercard is partnering with Anthropic, an AI safety and research company. Anthropic, which has been featured in 39 FF News stories, is the developer of the Claude family of large language models. The collaboration places Mastercard at the intersection of financial services and generative AI, competing for mindshare in a space where OpenAI—the creator of ChatGPT and a subject of 45 FF News reports—also maintains a significant presence.

By aligning with Anthropic to provide blueprints for commerce agents, Mastercard is positioning itself as the infrastructure layer for the next generation of digital assistants. This strategy leverages its existing relationships with global acquirers and technology platforms to ensure that as the interface of commerce changes, the underlying payment rails remain secure and interoperable across different AI ecosystems. The involvement of diverse partners like Nexi and Network International suggests a focus on ensuring these agentic tools can be integrated into various merchant ecosystems globally.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has tracked Mastercard’s move into the agentic space throughout 2026. This includes the recent announcement that Mastercard and Backbase Launch Agentic Banking Solutions for 120+ Global Banks, which focused on the retail banking side of the equation. The scale of this shift was highlighted in a previous report where Mastercard Predicts £370 Billion AI Shopping Shift as Agentic Commerce Emerges, suggesting a massive reallocation of consumer spending toward automated channels. Additionally, the company has been refining its digital commerce capabilities through regional partnerships, such as when Mastercard and Flowcart Launch In-Chat Payments to Transform Social Commerce in Africa. These prior developments underscore a consistent strategy of embedding payment security into emerging digital interfaces, whether they are social media chats or autonomous AI agents.

What this means

The transition to agentic commerce represents a fundamental shift for the traditional e-commerce storefront. If consumers begin delegating product research and purchasing to AI agents, the value of SEO, web design, and direct-to-consumer marketing funnels may diminish significantly. The industry is now facing a critical question: how do brands maintain influence when the "shopper" is an algorithm rather than a human? Mastercard’s move to standardise "Verifiable Intent" suggests that trust and authorization will be the primary battlegrounds. For the broader fintech sector, this announcement puts pressure on traditional payment gateways to evolve beyond simple checkout buttons and into sophisticated API-first facilitators that can handle the nuances of machine-to-machine transactions.
