Bank of Ireland and Stripe Partner to Supercharge AI-Driven Payments Innovation
By Ali Paterson · 10 September 2026

Bank of Ireland has entered a strategic partnership with Stripe to integrate the fintech’s programmable financial infrastructure into its core operating systems. This collaboration aims to accelerate payments innovation and AI adoption within the bank, representing a significant move for traditional retail banking as it seeks to modernise legacy backend operations and improve digital service delivery.
What was announced
The partnership focuses on embedding Stripe’s advanced, AI-driven financial technologies directly into Bank of Ireland’s core systems. This integration is intended to streamline backend operations and enhance the speed and reliability of the bank’s payment services. While the broader strategic agreement is a new milestone in the bank's digital transformation, it builds on an existing relationship within the Bank of Ireland Group.
Specifically, Davy, the group’s wealth and capital markets provider, has utilised Stripe’s Bank Transfer product since 2021. This implementation has processed over €2 billion in volume and is credited with saving 3,000 hours of manual work annually. Following this success, New Ireland Assurance—Bank of Ireland Group’s life and pensions provider—is scheduled to roll out a similar product shortly to improve its own payment reconciliation processes.
The move follows a series of digital updates from Bank of Ireland aimed at providing faster, more intuitive services. In March, the bank launched Zippay for instant mobile-to-mobile payments and Quicker Payments for same-day transfers for UK business customers. These developments were preceded by the introduction of SEPA Instant in late 2025, which enabled instant euro payments. Additionally, the bank has introduced AI-driven tools such as Benefits Finder to help customers identify tax benefits and an online ‘Electric Vehicle Marketplace.’ The Stripe partnership is positioned as a core component of this ongoing programme to accelerate technology and AI integration across the bank’s retail and business offerings.
"We always strive to provide easy-to-access and fast service to our customers. Payments are a core part of the value we deliver and partnering with Stripe provides us with new opportunities. Stripe is a great success story, with a strong Irish heritage. We look forward to working with their team to further enhance our technology and accelerate AI integration to improve services for customers."

The companies involved
Bank of Ireland is one of the largest commercial banks in Ireland, maintaining a dominant position in the retail and commercial banking sectors. It operates through various subsidiaries, including Davy and New Ireland Assurance, and has been increasingly focused on modernising its technology stack to compete with digital-first challengers. The bank provides a wide range of financial services including personal banking, wealth management, and corporate finance across Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Stripe is a programmable financial services company that provides payment processing software and infrastructure for e-commerce and mobile applications. Founded by Irish brothers Patrick and John Collison, the company maintains a significant presence in Dublin and is a major player in the global fintech ecosystem. Stripe’s infrastructure is designed to handle complex money movement, including payments, billing, and financial automation. The company has evolved from a payment gateway into a comprehensive financial platform that serves both high-growth startups and established global enterprises. Its "programmable money" approach allows financial institutions to automate reconciliation and integrate advanced financial logic into their existing workflows, moving beyond simple transaction processing.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has tracked Stripe’s expanding role in the intersection of payments and artificial intelligence. The publication recently covered how Stripe and AWS Partner to Enable Autonomous AI Agent Payments via Privy, highlighting the company’s focus on enabling machine-to-machine transactions and autonomous financial logic. This move into AI-driven financial services aligns with the current partnership's emphasis on integrating AI into Bank of Ireland’s core systems. Stripe’s frequent appearances in FF News, with over 170 stories documented, reflect its position as a central infrastructure provider for the modern digital economy. Bank of Ireland has also been a regular subject of coverage, with 14 previous reports detailing its efforts to upgrade its digital capabilities and payment infrastructure in a competitive European market.
What this means
This partnership signals a shift in how traditional incumbent banks view fintech infrastructure. Rather than seeing companies like Stripe purely as external competitors or simple gateways, Bank of Ireland is treating them as essential components of their core architecture. This puts pressure on other legacy institutions that are still struggling with manual reconciliation and slow backend processes. The success of the Davy implementation suggests that the real value here is not just in the customer-facing interface, but in the massive operational efficiency gains found in "programmable money." The industry will be watching to see if this deep integration can truly bypass the friction typically associated with legacy banking cores.
