JCB and Nexi have expanded their contactless payment partnership to Italy’s Campania region, enabling millions of international travelers to use "Tap & Go" on public transport. For fintech professionals, this move underscores the accelerating convergence of transit and open-loop payments, specifically targeting the high-value Asian tourism market through regional integration with the Unico Campania consortium.

What was announced

JCB and Nexi have officially launched a strategic partnership to enable JCB Card acceptance across the public transport network in Italy’s Campania region. This initiative, delivered through the Unico Campania consortium, allows travelers to utilize "Tap & Go" technology. Passengers can now access metro lines, funiculars, and buses by tapping their contactless JCB cards or smartphones at enabled gates and ticket validators. The service is designed to cater to the millions of tourists visiting southern Italy, including the 181 million JCB cardmembers who are primarily based in Asia.

The agreement covers a broad geographical area, including Naples and major tourist destinations such as Pompeii. Beyond the automated gates, JCB Cards will also be accepted at Unico Campania’s physical ticket offices and info points. This rollout follows a successful implementation of a similar payment model in Rome, which JCB and Nexi introduced in May 2024. Key features of the service include automatic best-fare calculation, which ensures passengers are charged the most economical rate based on their journeys within a 24-hour period. This eliminates the need for travelers to research complex fare structures or purchase physical tickets in advance, significantly reducing barriers to using public infrastructure. The service is being made available progressively across the consortium’s various lines, with updated availability tracked via the official Unico Campania website.

"The new service launched in the Campania region together with JCB demonstrates our ability to bring the best payment solutions to local communities across Italy, leveraging both our technology and our strong partnerships with global players,"

Filippo Maria Signoretti, Merchant Solutions Director Italy at Nexi.

The companies involved

Nexi is a prominent European PayTech leader, headquartered in Italy, that provides the infrastructure for digital payments across a wide array of sectors. The company has established itself as a dominant force in the merchant services market, often acting as the primary partner for global payment schemes looking to penetrate the Italian market. JCB, a major global payment brand and the leading credit card issuer and acquirer in Japan, operates its international business through JCB International Co., Ltd. With a massive footprint in Asia, JCB has spent recent years expanding its acceptance network in Europe to serve its 181 million cardmembers traveling abroad. The Unico Campania consortium represents the local operational side of this partnership, serving as the management body for integrated ticketing across multiple public transport operators in the Campania region. This regional structure is essential for implementing "Tap & Go" systems that require coordination between various bus, metro, and funicular lines across southern Italy.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has previously tracked Nexi’s role in expanding European payment infrastructure, particularly through its involvement with the European Payments Initiative (EPI). In recent coverage, we noted how dm Integrates Wero E-Commerce Payments via Nexi and European Payments Initiative, highlighting Nexi's position as a critical bridge between local retail environments and emerging digital payment standards like Wero. This prior reporting underscores Nexi's broader strategy of facilitating cross-border payment interoperability, whether through e-commerce integrations in Germany or transit solutions in Italy. By providing the technical backbone for these diverse payment methods, Nexi continues to consolidate its influence over the European merchant services landscape, bridging the gap between global schemes and local infrastructure.

What this means

The expansion of JCB acceptance into Campania’s transit network highlights a critical shift in how regional transport authorities view international tourism. By removing the friction of physical ticket offices and local-only apps, Unico Campania is effectively competing for the "tourist dollar" by making the region more accessible to high-spending Asian travelers. For the wider fintech sector, this move puts pressure on other regional transit hubs to adopt open-loop systems or risk alienating international visitors. The real question for the industry is whether these transit-led integrations will serve as a catalyst for wider JCB acceptance in local retail and hospitality, creating a seamless experience for the traveler that bypasses traditional currency exchange.
