German drugstore giant dm has integrated Wero into its online shop, marking a significant milestone for the European Payments Initiative (EPI). For fintech professionals, this move signals Wero’s transition from a peer-to-peer transfer tool into a viable e-commerce competitor, challenging the dominance of non-European card schemes and digital wallets in the DACH region.

What was announced

dm-drogerie markt has officially added Wero as a payment option for its German e-commerce platform. This integration allows customers to pay for health and beauty products directly through their existing bank accounts without the need for a credit card or a separate payment account. The rollout is the result of a tripartite collaboration between dm, the European Payments Initiative (EPI), and the payment service provider Nexi.

Wero operates on an account-to-account (A2A) model, utilizing instant bank transfers. When a customer selects Wero at the dm checkout, they are redirected to their familiar banking app to confirm the transaction. This process adheres to European banking standards and data protection regulations. dm is among the first major retail companies in Germany to adopt the solution for online shopping, providing a modern and secure European alternative to traditional payment methods.

The timing is notable as Wero has been live for retail payments in Germany since the end of 2025. Nexi, which facilitates merchant acceptance for the wallet, confirmed that dm is the fourth major merchant it has connected to the system. The initiative aims to capitalize on the growing consumer demand for sovereign European payment infrastructures that offer ease of use alongside high security. The integration reflects a broader shift in the payments landscape, where digital wallets and European-led infrastructures are expected to play a more central role in digital commerce.

"With dm, another leading retailer in Germany is choosing Wero – sending a strong signal for the further establishment of the European payment solution. A key factor in the success of any new payment method is that it is available at relevant merchants and easy for consumers to use in their everyday lives. As a payment service provider, Nexi enables merchant acceptance and at the same time helps retailers integrate the growing variety of digital payment options seamlessly into their existing payment landscape. The fact that dm is already the fourth major merchant we are connecting to Wero shows that Wero is increasingly moving from concept to actual use in German e-commerce."

The companies involved

dm-drogerie markt is a dominant force in the European drugstore sector, operating more than 4,200 stores across the continent. In Germany alone, the company employs approximately 63,600 people and maintains a network of over 2,150 locations. It has consistently been ranked as Germany’s most popular drugstore retailer in consumer surveys, such as the 2025 Kundenmonitor, and was recognized with the German Sustainability Award for Consumer Goods Retail in 2024.

The integration is powered by Nexi, a Milan-headquartered PayTech leader that operates in more than 25 countries. Nexi serves over two million businesses, ranging from local small enterprises to large-scale marketplaces. The publicly listed group employs 10,000 people across Europe and focuses on simplifying complex, country-specific payment processes.

The European Payments Initiative (EPI), the body behind Wero, is a consortium supported by 18 European banks and payment service providers, with over 50 member institutions in total. Wero is its flagship sovereign digital wallet, designed to unify mobile payments across Europe. The wallet currently serves 57 million users and has been live for peer-to-peer (P2P) transactions in Belgium, France, and Germany since 2024. Future developments for Wero include the unveiling of payments to professionals (P2Pro), point-of-sale payments in 2026, and major migrations for Payconiq in Luxembourg and iDEAL in the Netherlands.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely tracked the development of the Wero ecosystem as it seeks to establish a foothold in the European market. In August 2026, we covered how N26 Launches Wero Digital Wallet for IBAN-Free Instant Payments in Germany and France. That report highlighted the wallet's ability to facilitate instant transfers without requiring an IBAN, a key feature in its initial P2P rollout. The expansion into retail with dm represents the next logical phase of this deployment, moving beyond individual transfers into high-volume commercial transactions within the German market.

What this means

The entry of dm into the Wero ecosystem is a litmus test for the European Payments Initiative’s retail ambitions. By securing a high-frequency, "everyday" retailer, Wero moves from a technical concept to a tangible consumer habit. This puts immediate pressure on established digital wallets like PayPal and traditional card schemes that have long dominated the German e-commerce checkout. However, the ultimate success of Wero depends on whether other major retailers follow dm’s lead to create a network effect. The industry will be watching to see if A2A payments can truly achieve the frictionless experience required to displace credit cards at scale in the competitive DACH market.
