American Express and Bread Financial Launch Refreshed NFL Extra Points Credit Card
1 September 2026

American Express and Bread Financial have officially launched the NFL Extra Points Credit Card program on the American Express Network. This transition provides cardholders with Amex-specific benefits and protections while maintaining Bread Financial as the issuer. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant alignment between a major sports league and a premium payment network.
What was announced
The refreshed NFL Extra Points American Express Credit Card is designed to deepen fan engagement through a tiered rewards structure and exclusive access. Cardholders earn 3% back on qualifying NFL and team purchases, 2% at grocery stores, restaurants, gyms, and on food delivery, and 1% on all other spending. A welcome bonus offers $100 in cash back, delivered as a statement credit, after a $500 spend outside of NFL purchases within the first 90 days of account opening.
The program features no annual fee and provides a permanent 25% discount at NFLShop.com, alongside periodic promotional offers throughout the year. A key feature for high-value fans is the special financing available for ticket purchases exceeding $250 when bought through official channels like Ticketmaster, SeatGeek, or Sports Illustrated Tickets.
By moving to the American Express Network, the program now includes Amex Offers and Amex Experiences, which grant cardholders access to ticket presales for music, theater, and sporting events. At select venues, users can access dedicated entrances or fast lanes. The cards also come with refreshed designs for 18 participating NFL teams, allowing fans to customize their plastic or digital wallets with team-specific branding. This rollout builds on a recently announced multi-year global partnership where American Express will serve as the Official Payments Partner of the NFL beginning with the 2026 season.
"Together with the NFL and Bread Financial, we're bringing fans closer to the football teams they love by providing meaningful value and unforgettable NFL experiences, backed by the security and benefits of the American Express Network."

The companies involved
American Express is a globally integrated payments company, providing customers with access to products, insights, and experiences that enrich lives and build business success. Unlike many competitors, it operates a closed-loop network, though this partnership demonstrates its willingness to serve as the network for third-party issuers like Bread Financial. The company has a long history of high-end rewards and travel-related services.
Bread Financial, formerly known as Alliance Data Systems, is a tech-forward financial services company providing simple, personalized payment, lending, and saving solutions. Based in Columbus, Ohio, the firm specializes in private label and co-branded credit cards, as well as buy now, pay later (BNPL) products. By acting as the issuer for the NFL program, Bread Financial manages the credit risk and customer experience while leveraging the Amex brand for network benefits.
The partnership also involves major ticketing platforms. Ticketmaster and SeatGeek are primary and secondary ticket marketplaces that integrate with the card’s financing features. Sports Illustrated Tickets also serves as a redemption and purchase point, highlighting the card's focus on the live events ecosystem within the broader sports industry.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has recently tracked the evolving landscape of the American Express ecosystem and the wider credit market. We reported on how Amex Ventures Invests in Fazeshift to Scale AI-Powered Autonomous Accounts Receivable, showcasing the company's interest in B2B automation and fintech investment.
Furthermore, the broader economic context for this launch is shaped by shifting consumer stability in the United States. According to the JD Power 2026 Study: 60% of U.S. Credit Card Customers Now Classified as Financially Unhealthy. This data suggests that high-engagement rewards programs, like the NFL Extra Points card, are increasingly vital for issuers looking to attract and retain the remaining segment of financially stable, high-spending consumers who prioritize lifestyle perks and brand loyalty over basic credit access.
What this means
This move signals a strategic pivot in the co-branded card market, where "fandom" is being used as a primary driver for customer acquisition in a saturated field. By migrating the NFL program to the American Express network, Bread Financial is attempting to elevate the perceived value of the card without the overhead of an annual fee. This puts pressure on other mid-market issuers who rely on generic cashback models. The industry should note how Amex is positioning itself as a network provider for niche, high-loyalty groups, potentially challenging the dominance of Visa and Mastercard in the professional sports sponsorship space. It remains to be seen if this network shift will significantly alter the card's adoption rate among younger fans.
