JCB International and Hanoi Metro have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to integrate JCB contactless payments into Hanoi’s urban railway network. Scheduled for an early 2027 launch, the initiative allows commuters and international tourists to bypass physical tickets by tapping cards or devices at fare gates, accelerating Vietnam’s transition toward a cashless public transportation ecosystem.

What was announced

The collaboration between JCB International Co., Ltd. and Hanoi Metro One Member Limited Liability Company (Hanoi Metro) establishes a framework to deploy JCB transit across Hanoi’s metro lines. Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in Hanoi, the service is slated to go live in the first quarter of 2027. Once operational, the system will allow JCB Cardmembers to use contactless-enabled cards or compatible mobile devices to tap directly at metro fare gates.

The primary objective of the partnership is to streamline the travel experience for both local residents and international visitors. By removing the requirement to purchase physical transit tickets or carry local currency for fare payments, the project specifically targets travelers from key regional markets such as Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, where JCB maintains a significant presence. This integration is part of a broader strategy to support the development of cashless payment infrastructure within Vietnam’s public infrastructure. Both organizations are currently working on the technical preparations required to meet the early 2027 target date, ensuring the metro network can process JCB’s contactless protocols at high-volume entry and exit points.

"JCB International is delighted to collaborate with Hanoi Metro to introduce JCB transit in Hanoi. We hope this service will provide greater convenience to JCB Cardmembers and contribute to the development of a modern and cashless public transportation ecosystem in Vietnam."

The companies involved

JCB International Co., Ltd. serves as the international operations arm of JCB Co., Ltd., which holds the distinction of being Japan’s only international payment brand. Since its inception, the company has expanded its acceptance network globally, positioning itself as a major competitor to Western payment giants, particularly within the Asian market. JCB’s strategy often focuses on high-growth corridors where Japanese tourism and business interests are concentrated, leveraging its domestic dominance to build cross-border payment utility.

Hanoi Metro One Member Limited Liability Company is the primary entity responsible for the operation and management of the urban railway network in Vietnam’s capital. As Hanoi continues to expand its transit infrastructure to alleviate road congestion and modernize urban mobility, the company has become a central figure in the city’s digital transformation. By partnering with international payment networks, Hanoi Metro aims to align its operational standards with global transit hubs, facilitating easier access for the millions of commuters and tourists who navigate the city's developing rail lines each year.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has closely followed JCB’s aggressive expansion across the ASEAN region and its push into transit technology. In October 2026, the brand collaborated with regional banks to launch high-end products, including the JCB and Krungsri Launch Premium 'Ultimate' Credit Card for Thailand's Japan-Focused Consumers and the JCB and MUFG Bank Launch Ultra-Premium "Treasure Card" for Affluent Indonesian Travelers. This move into Hanoi’s metro mirrors JCB’s European efforts, such as when JCB and Nexi Partner to Enable Contactless Transit Payments Across Campania Public Transport. Additionally, the company has focused on internal corporate goals, recently achieving a JCB Hits Major Sustainability Milestone with 82.4% Reduction in Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

What this means

This move signals that open-loop transit payments are no longer a luxury but a baseline requirement for modern urban infrastructure. By securing a foothold in Hanoi, JCB is directly challenging the dominance of local closed-loop transit cards and ensuring its cardholders do not face friction when traveling within the ASEAN bloc. For the fintech sector, this highlights the ongoing "transit wars" where payment schemes compete to become the default daily-use interface for commuters. The pressure now shifts to other regional transit authorities to modernize their gate hardware, as failure to support international contactless standards increasingly risks alienating high-spending international tourists.
