JCB Contactless Expands to LA Metro: Tap-to-Pay Now Live for Transit Riders
By Lauren Towner · 18 August 2026

JCB International has expanded its North American footprint by integrating JCB Contactless into the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LA Metro) network. For fintech professionals, this move signals a critical infrastructure upgrade in one of the world’s largest transit markets, prioritizing interoperability for international travelers ahead of major global sporting events.
What was announced
JCB International Co., Ltd. and its U.S. subsidiary, JCB International Credit Card Co., Ltd. (JCB USA), have confirmed that JCB Contactless is now accepted across the entirety of the LA Metro system. This integration covers the newly introduced TAP validators installed on all Metro buses and at every Metro Rail station throughout Los Angeles County. The system allows JCB cardholders to bypass traditional ticket vending machines or the need to purchase a proprietary TAP card.
The implementation utilizes EMV contactless technology, enabling riders to pay for fares by tapping their physical JCB cards or JCB-enabled smartphones directly at the validator. This rollout is part of a broader modernization effort by LA Metro to enhance accessibility for both daily commuters and international visitors. By removing the friction of currency exchange or local card registration, the partnership specifically targets the high volume of travelers arriving from JCB’s primary markets in Asia. The service is live across one of the most extensive transportation networks in the United States, which serves as the primary transit artery for the region's diverse communities and tourist hubs.
"We are excited to announce that JCB has been included as one of the payment options in LA Metro’s contactless fare payment system. JCB Cardholders can now enjoy the convenience of contactless payments across LA Metro’s trains and buses simply by tapping their cards or smartphones at the validator,"
Fumihiko Mitsuoka, President & CEO of JCB USA.
The companies involved
JCB is Japan’s only international payment brand, operating a massive global network through its subsidiaries JCB International Co., Ltd. and JCB USA. The company has been a pioneer in the contactless space, having led the development and deployment of the technology in the Japanese market since the early 2000s. Today, it functions as a major global issuer and acquirer, competing directly with Western schemes by leveraging its dominant position in Asian markets to secure acceptance at high-traffic international destinations.
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority, commonly known as LA Metro, is the public agency responsible for the planning, operation, and coordination of transit services for the most populous county in the United States. Operating a vast fleet of buses and an expanding light rail and subway system, LA Metro is currently undergoing a significant technological overhaul of its "TAP" fare system. This modernization aims to transition the agency toward an open-loop payment environment, where standard bank cards and mobile wallets are treated with the same utility as dedicated transit passes.
What this means
This is a strategic win for JCB in the competitive U.S. transit market. While Los Angeles is a massive domestic hub, it is also a primary gateway for Asian tourism; ensuring JCB cards work seamlessly on the bus and rail lines is a prerequisite for maintaining card relevance for Japanese and East Asian travelers. The move puts pressure on other regional transit authorities to adopt open-loop systems that support international schemes beyond just Visa and Mastercard. As Los Angeles prepares for a decade of high-profile international events, the ability to handle diverse global payment methods will be the benchmark for successful urban mobility. Watch for JCB to pursue similar "tap-to-ride" agreements in other major U.S. tourist corridors like New York or San Francisco.
