BMO and Mastercard have launched a new embedded commercial payment capability, allowing corporate clients to manage virtual card payments directly within their existing software platforms. This integration removes the need for disconnected banking portals, streamlining treasury and procurement workflows for businesses in Canada and the United States while marking BMO as the first Mastercard issuer in Canada to offer this specific experience.

What was announced

The new solution enables eligible BMO Corporate Card clients to initiate and manage virtual card payments within the enterprise resource planning (ERP), procurement, accounts payable, and travel management systems they already use for daily operations. Historically, corporate payment workflows have been fragmented, requiring manual intervention and the use of separate banking portals to execute transactions. This new capability aims to bridge that gap by embedding payment execution directly into the primary operational workflow.

The integration is built upon Mastercard’s Commercial Express framework, which provides a standardized method for platforms to enable issuer-backed virtual card payments. This framework is designed to reduce the technical complexity of implementation, allowing for a faster rollout across the business ecosystem. Through this setup, corporate treasury and accounts-payable teams can execute secure payments for supplier invoices, corporate travel, and other business expenses without leaving their internal software environments.

Key features of the offering include:

  • Streamlined Workflows: Users can initiate, approve, and reconcile virtual card transactions within their existing platform interfaces, which can accelerate invoice settlement.
  • Enhanced Control: The system provides precise parameters for spending and automated reconciliation data, aiding in working capital efficiency.
  • Scalability: The standardized framework allows for broader adoption across different software platforms, reducing the friction typically associated with platform-to-issuer setups.

The service is currently available for eligible clients across both the Canadian and United States markets.

"As our Corporate Card clients digitize their operations, they expect us to integrate seamlessly into their existing workflows," said Seth Blacher, Head of TPS Product Management and Payments Modernization, BMO. "This partnership with Mastercard lets us deliver exactly that by removing the friction between finance software and payment execution, creating a more streamlined payment experience."

What FF News has reported before

FF News has extensively tracked Mastercard’s role in expanding card capabilities and settlement technologies. Recently, the publication covered how SoFi Bank Scales Stablecoin Settlement to $25B via Mastercard Network, showcasing the network's capacity for high-volume corporate transactions. In the retail and rewards space, FF News reported that Kroger Partners with Imprint and Mastercard to Launch High-Yield Rewards Credit Card.

The trend toward automating corporate workflows is a recurring theme in recent coverage. FF News reported on how LoanPro Launches AI Servicing Agents and Real-Time Card Disbursements for Lenders, as well as news that Corpay Expands AI Agent Suite to Automate Corporate Spend and Accounting Workflows. These stories reflect a broader industry move toward reducing manual intervention in financial operations, a goal shared by the new BMO and Mastercard integration.

What this means

This announcement signals a significant shift in the competitive landscape for corporate banking, where the "banking portal" is increasingly viewed as a point of friction rather than a destination. By embedding payment capabilities directly into ERPs and procurement software, BMO is defending its corporate client base against agile fintech competitors that have long prioritized seamless UI/UX. For the wider industry, this move puts pressure on other commercial issuers to adopt standardized frameworks like Mastercard’s Commercial Express. It raises a critical question for the sector: as banking services become invisible components of third-party software, how will traditional banks maintain brand loyalty and direct client engagement?
