Stripe has marked a decade of operations in Japan by launching a suite of tools designed to overhaul how local businesses access credit and expand internationally. With 150,000 Japanese entities now using the platform, the introduction of Stripe Capital and localized managed payments signals a direct challenge to the country’s traditional, often rigid, corporate lending structures.

What was announced

At the Stripe Tour Tokyo event, the company revealed that more than 45,000 new Japanese businesses joined its platform in the last year alone. To support this growth, Stripe is introducing Stripe Capital to the Japanese market in 2027. This product allows businesses to secure financing based on their real-time revenue data rather than traditional collateral or extensive paperwork. Repayments are structured as a fixed percentage of daily sales, a model Stripe claims helped businesses in other markets grow 27 percentage points faster than their peers.

The company also launched Stripe Managed Payments, a service allowing Japanese firms to sell digital products across 195 countries. Under this model, Stripe manages the complexities of indirect tax, fraud protection, disputes, and customer support, removing the need for businesses to establish local entities in every market they serve. This follows data showing that Japanese businesses on Stripe have increased their overseas sales by an average of 63% annually over the last five years.

Domestically, Stripe is integrating five major QR code-based payment methods: Rakuten Pay, d-Barai, au PAY, Merpay, and Aeon Pay. These can be managed via the new Stripe Checkout Studio. On the hardware side, the company announced that Tap to Pay on Android is now available in Japan, alongside the launch of the T600 Terminal, a device featuring a customer-facing display for custom applications and in-store information.

"The boom in entrepreneurship is an immense opportunity for the Japanese economy. The challenge now is how to help the best of these businesses to scale faster than ever, as the global economy replatforms around AI. Japan’s high standards for quality, reliability, and trust give its companies a distinct advantage in this transition, and it’s a privilege to support so many of them in making the most of this moment."

The companies involved

Stripe is a global programmable financial services company that provides economic infrastructure for the internet. Since its launch in Japan ten years ago, it has moved from serving early-stage startups to supporting some of the nation’s largest and most established brands, including Toyota, DeNA, and the marketplace giant Mercari. It also provides the underlying infrastructure for newer AI-driven firms like Sakana AI.

The company occupies a central role in the global fintech ecosystem, often acting as the bridge between traditional banking rails and modern digital commerce. In Japan, Stripe competes in a landscape where cash and legacy banking systems have historically dominated, but where digital transformation is now accelerating. By positioning itself as a provider of both payments and working capital, Stripe is moving beyond simple transaction processing to become a full-stack financial partner for Japanese entrepreneurs and enterprises alike. FF News has tracked the company’s evolution extensively, with over 180 reports covering its global expansion and product iterations.

What FF News has reported before

Stripe’s recent moves in Japan align with a broader global strategy of embedding financial services directly into the merchant experience. FF News recently reported on how Stripe to Acquire Parafin to Boost Embedded Credit for Small Businesses, a move that significantly bolstered its capabilities in the working capital space now being deployed in Japan.

The company has also been active in expanding its payment method repertoire and cross-border capabilities. We covered how BLIK Goes Global: Stripe Integration Expands Polish Payment Method to 30+ Countries and the partnership where YeahPay and Stripe Partner to Scale Global Merchant Services Across Seven Major Markets. Additionally, Stripe continues to bridge the gap between traditional and decentralized finance, as seen when Polygon Launches Checkout: Seamless Stablecoin Payments for Stripe Merchants.

What this means

The introduction of Stripe Capital to Japan is a significant moment for the region’s fintech sector. For decades, the Japanese lending market has been criticized for a lack of dynamism, with capital often tied up in stagnant sectors while high-growth startups struggle for liquidity. By using real-time payment data to underwrite loans, Stripe is bypassing the traditional gatekeepers of Japanese finance. This puts immediate pressure on domestic banks to modernize their credit models or risk losing the most promising segment of the economy. Furthermore, the adoption of local QR codes like Rakuten Pay shows that Stripe is no longer just an "international" layer; it is becoming a deeply localized utility that understands the specific nuances of Japanese consumer behavior.
