Vodafone and Digital Virgo Partner to Secure Digital Payments via Open Gateway APIs
By Lauren Towner · 29 September 2026

Vodafone and Digital Virgo have partnered to integrate standardized Open Gateway Network APIs into mobile payment and carrier billing systems. This collaboration aims to replace friction-heavy SMS one-time passwords with secure, network-level authentication, offering fintechs and merchants a more robust way to verify identities and prevent fraud across Europe and Africa.
What was announced
The partnership focuses on accelerating the adoption of CAMARA-based standards through the GSMA Open Gateway initiative. Digital Virgo will integrate Vodafone’s Network APIs into its monetization suite, which currently serves over 300 merchants and 150 operators. The rollout will initially target five key markets: the United Kingdom, Germany, Greece, Spain, and South Africa, with the intent to reach more territories later. This geographic spread is significant, as it bridges mature European digital economies with the rapidly growing mobile-first markets of Africa.
The technical core of the agreement involves moving away from traditional authentication methods that often lead to cart abandonment and security vulnerabilities. Specifically, the companies will deploy "Number Verify" to replace SMS One-Time Passwords (OTP). This creates a faster, lower-friction authentication process by verifying the user's identity directly through the mobile network rather than requiring the manual entry of a code. For content creators and media companies, this reduction in friction is expected to directly correlate with higher conversion rates and lower churn.
Additionally, the collaboration will combine several Open Gateway APIs, including "Know Your Customer (KYC) Match" and "SIM Swap" detection. These tools are designed to strengthen onboarding and scoring, providing merchants and digital service providers with real-time data to prevent account takeovers and identity theft. By embedding these operator-grade identity and fraud prevention capabilities directly into the billing layer, third-party providers can reduce the risk of sophisticated fraud while improving the overall customer experience. This move transforms the telecom network into a programmable platform, allowing developers to access network features through consistent and scalable interfaces across different regions.
"Vodafone’s partnership with Digital Virgo will make our secure network capabilities available to more enterprises through standardised APIs. As smartphones become the default way for people to shop and bank online, the network is playing a critical role in enabling trusted ecommerce services and increasing customer confidence."

The companies involved
Vodafone is a global telecommunications giant with a significant footprint across Europe and Africa. The company has taken a leading role in the GSMA Open Gateway initiative, pushing for the standardization of network APIs to allow third-party developers to interact with telco infrastructure more easily. In the fintech space, Vodafone’s reach is particularly influential in Africa, where mobile money and carrier billing are primary drivers of financial inclusion. The company has been a vocal proponent of creating a common framework for developers, ensuring that network features are accessible through consistent interfaces regardless of the operator. This leadership position is critical as the industry moves toward a more interoperable digital economy.
Digital Virgo is a global specialist in mobile commerce, focusing on distribution, payments, and monetization strategies. Operating in more than 60 countries, the firm acts as a bridge between telecom operators and merchants, providing the technology needed to facilitate seamless digital transactions. Digital Virgo’s expertise lies in carrier billing—a payment method that allows consumers to charge purchases to their phone bills—making them a strategic partner for Vodafone as the industry shifts toward programmable network capabilities. The company manages a vast ecosystem of content creators and media companies, positioning it as a key aggregator for the rollout of new authentication standards. By working with over 150 operators, Digital Virgo provides the scale necessary to make these new API standards a reality for hundreds of merchants globally.
What this means
This partnership signals a shift in the "telco-as-a-platform" model, moving beyond simple connectivity to becoming a critical layer of the global security stack. By standardizing APIs like SIM Swap and KYC Match, Vodafone and Digital Virgo are putting direct pressure on third-party identity verification providers who rely on less integrated data sources. The industry is clearly moving away from SMS-based security, which has long been a weak point for social engineering and intercept attacks. However, the success of this initiative will depend on whether other major carriers follow suit to ensure the "interoperable digital economy" Vodafone envisions actually achieves global scale. If fragmentation persists between different carrier standards, the friction-reducing benefits for global merchants may be limited.
