Swedish fintech Froda is entering the French market through a partnership with Shine, providing embedded financing to the country's 1.1 million new businesses. For fintech professionals, this move highlights the growing viability of automated credit assessment in solving the "small-ticket" lending gap that traditional banks often find too costly to address.

What was announced

Froda has officially launched in France, marking its eighth European market following entries into the Nordics, the UK, Ireland, and Germany. Through a strategic partnership with business banking platform Shine, Froda is making its fully digital financing solution available to 200,000 self-employed individuals and small businesses directly within the Shine app. The launch follows a successful pilot conducted over the summer with a controlled group of customers, with the full rollout beginning this month.

The solution is specifically designed to meet the needs of France's burgeoning SME sector. In 2025, France registered 1,165,800 new businesses, the majority of which were sole traders and micro-entrepreneurs. While SMEs comprise 99% of French companies and employ 6.9 million people, they often struggle to secure small-scale funding. Froda addresses this by offering loans ranging from €500 to €50,000. By automating credit assessment using real-time banking data, the platform provides credit decisions instantly and pays out funds the same day, often within a single hour.

The French offering is supported by a microfinancing guarantee from the European Investment Fund (EIF) under the EU's InvestEU programme. As a Swedish credit institution supervised by the Swedish FSA (Finansinspektionen), Froda operates across the EU under passporting rules. This institutional backing from the EIF is intended to translate into better access to financing and more advantageous pricing for entrepreneurs who typically have limited access to traditional funding.

"France is creating more businesses than ever, but the financing hasn't followed. A €5,000 investment can be just as decisive for a small business as a €500,000 investment is for a larger company. The difference is that the economics of traditional lending make those smaller amounts harder to serve. With Shine, we can put financing where entrepreneurs already run their business, so they can act while the opportunity is still there."

The companies involved

Founded in Sweden in 2015, Froda has become a prominent player in the European embedded finance landscape. To date, the company has provided more than €2 billion in financing through over 160,000 loans to 30,000 small businesses. Its business model focuses on integrating lending directly into the banking, accounting, and payment platforms that SMEs use for their daily operations. Froda’s partner base has expanded significantly over the last year, including its first partnership with a traditional bank, SpareBank 1 Østlandet.

Shine is a business banking platform dedicated to the self-employed and small enterprises. The partnership in France builds on an existing relationship between Froda and the wider Shine group; other entities such as Kontist in Germany and Billy in Denmark already utilize Froda’s embedded platform for business lending. France represents the largest market where the two companies have collaborated. Shine’s ambition is to provide a comprehensive ecosystem where entrepreneurs can manage all aspects of their business in one place, with fast and fair financing acting as a critical component of that service for its 200,000 customers.

What FF News has reported before

FF News has followed Froda’s expansion across Europe as the company scales its embedded finance model. In July 2026, we reported that Froda and Kontist by Shine Launch EU-Backed Microfinancing for German Sole Traders, which established the blueprint for the current French expansion. This followed a significant period of growth in 2025, during which Froda Raises €20M to Accelerate Embedded SME Finance Across Europe to fuel its international ambitions. We also covered the company’s entry into the British market when Froda and Mimo Roll Out Embedded SME Funding for UK SMEs, as well as its Nordic activities where Froda and wamo Partner to Strengthen SME Financing in Finland Through Card-Based Lending and Instant Loans.

What this means

This launch signals a maturing of the embedded finance sector, where the focus is shifting from simple payment integration to complex credit products. By targeting the "micro-loan" segment that traditional banks often ignore due to high operational overheads, Froda is demonstrating that automation can make small-ticket lending economically viable. Traditional lenders are increasingly under pressure to either modernize their own assessment processes or partner with fintechs to avoid losing the SME segment entirely. Furthermore, the involvement of the European Investment Fund suggests that digital-first, data-driven lending is now viewed by regulators as a primary tool for driving economic liquidity among Europe's smallest businesses.
