Rubean Integrates Bizum into SoftPOS App to Dominate Spanish Real-Time Payments
By Lauren Towner · 25 August 2026

Munich-based fintech Rubean AG has integrated the Spanish real-time payment service Bizum into its SoftPOS application. This move provides Spanish merchants with a unified mobile acceptance point for the country’s most dominant local payment method, addressing a critical requirement for any payment provider operating within the Iberian Peninsula’s highly specific digital ecosystem.
What was announced
Rubean AG has officially expanded the range of payment methods available within its SoftPOS app to include Bizum for the Spanish market. The integration allows merchants using Rubean’s software-based point-of-sale technology to accept payments via Spain’s leading mobile payment solution alongside traditional card schemes.
The scale of this integration is significant due to Bizum’s market penetration. The service currently holds approximately 90 per cent of the Spanish real-time payment market. With over 30 million active users, Bizum is utilized by roughly 60 per cent of the Spanish population and bankable citizens. Unlike third-party wallets that require separate funding, Bizum is integrated directly into the mobile apps of Spanish banks, allowing for immediate account-to-account transfers.
For merchants, the Rubean SoftPOS app functions by replacing traditional, dedicated card reader hardware with a software-only solution. This enables retailers, food service providers, and delivery companies to accept mobile and cashless payments on standard mobile devices. By adding Bizum, Rubean targets a massive user base that prefers domestic real-time transfers over international card rails for daily transactions. The update is aimed specifically at strengthening Rubean's existing footprint in Spain, where it already maintains a significant market presence.
"By expanding our payment options to include Bizum, we are rounding out our offering for the Spanish market and can further strengthen our already strong market position,"
Stephan Kueck, Co-CEO of Rubean AG.
The companies involved
Rubean AG is a Munich-based fintech company (ISIN: DE0005120802) that specializes in transforming mobile devices into payment terminals. The company has established itself as a market leader in Germany, where it distinguishes itself as the only SoftPOS provider supporting girocard, the German domestic debit card scheme. Beyond its home market, Rubean has built a substantial presence in Spain, focusing on removing the logistical overhead and hardware costs associated with traditional electronic point-of-sale (EPOS) systems for small and large-scale commercial enterprises.
Bizum is the preeminent mobile payment service in Spain, functioning as a collaborative project between the majority of the country's banking institutions. It has evolved from a peer-to-peer transfer tool into a comprehensive payment ecosystem used for e-commerce and physical retail. By leveraging direct integration with banking infrastructure, it bypasses the need for traditional plastic cards for millions of Spanish consumers. The service is a cornerstone of the Spanish financial landscape, facilitating instant payments through a simple mobile interface linked to a user's phone number and bank account.
What FF News has reported before
FF News has previously tracked the expansion of both companies as they seek to bridge the gap between domestic payment schemes and international interoperability. In late 2023, we covered how emerchantpay Partners with Rubean AG to Launch SoftPOS Solution, highlighting the growing demand for hardware-free payment acceptance. More recently, the broader European push for instant payments was evidenced in our report, The Future of Payments is Here: International Instant Payments Between BANCOMAT, BIZUM and MB WAY Are Now Launching, which detailed how Bizum is participating in cross-border initiatives to link domestic real-time payment systems across Italy, Spain, and Portugal.
What this means
This integration signals a shift in the SoftPOS sector from "card-centric" to "scheme-agnostic." For a fintech to succeed in European markets with strong domestic identities, supporting Visa and Mastercard is no longer sufficient. Rubean’s strategy of capturing local favorites - girocard in Germany and now Bizum in Spain - puts significant pressure on international competitors who rely solely on global card rails. The move highlights a growing industry reality: in the race to digitize small merchants, the winner will likely be the one who accommodates the specific, entrenched habits of the local consumer base. The question now is whether other SoftPOS providers can achieve similar deep integrations with national real-time payment schemes before they are locked out of these dominant local markets.
