Aurionpro Solutions has secured a Master Service Agreement with Finnish transport provider Matkahuolto to deploy contactless EMV payment technology across Finland’s public transport network. This move marks Aurionpro’s strategic entry into the European market, signaling a shift toward unified, international payment standards in a region traditionally reliant on fragmented local transit card systems.

What was announced

Following a competitive RFP process, Matkahuolto selected Aurionpro as its device vendor to modernize fare collection across its digital transport services. The project centers on the implementation of contactless EMV (cEMV) capabilities, allowing passengers to use international bank cards alongside existing local contactless standards. This dual-standard support is intended to create a more flexible and accessible public transport environment for both domestic commuters and international visitors.

Aurionpro is tasked with providing its SCV 500 Validator and ECR-one contactless card reader. Beyond hardware, the agreement includes deep integration with Matkahuolto’s existing Transport Management System (TMS) and the provision of APIs for payment-application connectivity. This technical stack is designed to create a unified environment where tickets from various operators can be supported on Matkahuolto’s onboard solutions. The solution aims to deliver a seamless and reliable fare-payment experience across the public transport network by removing the friction associated with proprietary transit cards.

This initiative represents a significant milestone for Aurionpro, serving as its inaugural engagement in the European transit sector. By combining contactless validation with TMS and payment-application integration, the company is establishing a footprint for its global transit business expansion, specifically targeting the need for interoperability between international EMV cards and local payment protocols.

"We are grateful to Matkahuolto for choosing Aurionpro as its partner for this important initiative. We are proud to support Matkahuolto’s vision to make public transport more accessible, convenient, and attractive for people across Finland. This engagement marks our entry into the European market and is a significant milestone in expanding our global transit business. We are confident that this is the beginning of a strong pipeline of opportunities across Europe. Our contactless validation and payment capabilities, combined with TMS and payment-application integration, will help enable a seamless payment experience while supporting the acceptance of international EMV cards and local contactless payment standards."

What FF News has reported before

Aurionpro’s expansion into the European transit market follows recent high-level leadership changes within its payments division. FF News recently reported on the company’s efforts to bolster its executive team with the story Aurionpro Appoints Global Payments Veteran Krishnaraja Tantri as CEO of Payments Business. The appointment of Tantri, a veteran in the global payments space, highlighted Aurionpro’s intent to scale its payments business globally. This latest deal in Finland serves as a practical application of that growth strategy, moving from executive recruitment to active market entry within the same month.

What this means

The European transit sector is under increasing pressure to move away from "closed-loop" proprietary cards toward "open-loop" EMV payments. This announcement highlights a growing trend where regional transport authorities are looking for vendors who can bridge the gap between legacy local standards and global payment networks. For established European hardware vendors, the entry of an Indian-headquartered firm like Aurionpro introduces fresh competitive pressure on pricing and integration flexibility. The industry is now watching to see if this model of combining validators with deep TMS integration will become the standard for mid-sized European markets looking to modernize without a complete infrastructure overhaul.
