Mukuru Launches Visa Companion Card in Botswana to Drive Cashless Payments
By Lauren Towner · 20 August 2026

Mukuru has launched a Visa-branded Companion Card in Botswana, directly linking physical payment capabilities to its existing mobile wallet. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant bridge between mobile money and traditional card rails in a market where 38% of adults remain unbanked despite exceptionally high mobile penetration rates.
What was announced
The launch introduces a physical Visa-branded Companion Card that integrates directly with the Mukuru Wallet, a mobile-based financial management tool already used by customers in Botswana. The primary function of this card is to enable secure, cashless payments for everyday expenses—such as groceries, transport, utilities, and school fees—without requiring a traditional bank account. Because the card is linked to the wallet balance, users do not need to perform manual transfers between accounts to fund their spending.
The rollout targets a specific demographic gap in Botswana. While the country boasts a mobile penetration rate of 166% (representing 4.21 million connections for a population of 2.54 million), a large portion of the population remains outside the formal banking system. The Companion Card operates across all mobile networks and is accepted wherever Visa is recognized, including online merchants.
Security features integrated into the product include mandatory PIN protection for all transactions and Visa’s 3D Secure authentication for digital purchases. Furthermore, the system allows users to instantly block or stop a lost card directly from their mobile device. As a registered Electronic Payment Service Provider in Botswana, Mukuru’s new offering is fully regulated, providing a compliant alternative to cash-heavy daily management.
"Visa is committed to expanding access to the digital economy through secure and innovative payment solutions. This collaboration combines Visa’s global capabilities with Mukuru’s deep local presence to deliver greater value and choice to consumers across Botswana."

What FF News has reported before
FF News has consistently tracked the evolution of unified financial platforms and the integration of Visa payment rails into non-traditional banking products. We recently covered how Bix Launches Unified Financial Platform Integrating Self-Custody, Visa Payments, and IBANs, highlighting a similar trend of merging digital assets with physical spending power. Our reporting also extends to the infrastructure enabling these moves, such as when Lithic and Monavate Partner to Streamline Fiat and Digital Asset Card Issuing. Additionally, we have followed the expansion of global payment infrastructure, including when Nium Expands Global Infrastructure with Domestic Card Issuance Launch in the United States and the development of new banking solutions like when Ozone API Debuts cVRP Solution to Fast-Track Open Banking Monetisation for Non-CMA9 Banks.
What this means
This move by Mukuru is a direct challenge to traditional retail banks in Botswana. By bypassing the need for a formal bank account while offering the full utility of a Visa card, Mukuru is effectively turning its wallet into a primary financial hub for the unbanked. The high mobile penetration in Botswana makes this a high-probability success; the infrastructure is there, but the "last mile" of spending was previously locked in cash. Watch for other regional remittance players to follow suit. If Mukuru can successfully convert its massive remittance user base into daily card spenders, it will put significant pressure on local incumbents to lower barriers to entry for basic checking accounts.
