Ecommpay Unlocks Data Goldmine for Merchants with AI-Driven Payment Analytics
By Lauren Towner · 9 October 2026

Global payments platform Ecommpay has released a new white paper arguing that e-commerce merchants are failing to leverage the full potential of artificial intelligence by limiting its use to fraud prevention. For fintech professionals, this represents a significant push toward using payment service providers as strategic data partners to recover lost revenue and optimize enterprise-wide performance.
What was announced
The white paper, titled Earning insight from every transaction: optimising enterprise-wide performance through AI and payments data, challenges the current industry standard of using AI primarily as a defensive tool. Ecommpay asserts that while AI is well-proven for fraud management, its ability to interrogate vast volumes of transaction data for broader business benefits—such as marketing, demand forecasting, and corporate strategy—remains largely untapped by most merchants.
To demonstrate the practical application of these insights, Ecommpay has deployed a proprietary AI-driven performance analytics engine. This tool is designed to move beyond conventional payment routing by specifically targeting the three most common causes of global payment declines: 3DS authentication failures, fraud and suspicious transaction flags, and client-behaviour errors. The engine functions as a diagnostic tool, combining merchant data with issuer and acquirer signals to identify the root causes of failed transactions.
The impact of this technology is supported by data collected over a two-month period, during which Ecommpay reported an average 7% increase in authorization rates for its clients. The improvements varied across five specific sectors, with Retail seeing the most significant gain at 11.95%. Other sectors also showed marked improvements: Professional Services rose by 6.43%, Travel by 6.1%, Games by 5.85%, and Forex by 4.5%. The white paper suggests that by understanding the "why" behind transaction data, merchants can make systemic changes that improve customer loyalty and overall business performance.
"Merchants have the data but often lack the context. That’s where PSPs come in. We can combine merchant data with issuer and acquirer signals such as authorisation responses and chargebacks to identify where revenue is being lost and recommend fixes."

The companies involved
Ecommpay is an inclusive global payments platform that provides merchants with the infrastructure to accept payments and manage financial operations on a global scale. The company has established a significant presence in the fintech sector, with a focus on developing proprietary technology to solve complex payment challenges. As a Payment Service Provider (PSP), Ecommpay operates in a market that is increasingly shifting from basic transaction processing to providing high-level data analytics and strategic business insights.
The white paper also features contributions from other key industry figures. John Lunn, CEO and Founder at Gr4vy, provides insight into how AI can accelerate the diagnostic process that previously required years of specialist expertise. Gr4vy is a cloud-native payment orchestration platform that helps merchants manage their payment ecosystem. Additionally, Andre Moeller, Head of Payments, Risk and Fraud at Volkswagen AG (E-Charging), contributes a merchant-side perspective on how AI distinguishes meaningful patterns from normal variations in large payment volumes. These collaborations highlight a growing consensus among both providers and major corporate merchants that transaction data is an underutilized asset in the current e-commerce landscape.

What this means
The shift from using AI as a defensive "shield" to an offensive growth tool marks a critical evolution in the payment industry. For years, the "black box" of payment declines has been a source of friction, often dismissed as an unavoidable cost of digital commerce. However, as merchants face tighter margins and rising acquisition costs, the demand for transparency in authorization data is intensifying. This announcement highlights that the competitive advantage in the PSP market is moving away from simple transaction processing toward sophisticated data interpretation. The industry is now under pressure to provide merchants with actionable context rather than raw data, raising questions about how legacy providers will adapt to this demand for diagnostic intelligence.
